South Washington County is a big place with many different communities. Here’s some of what’s been happening or due to happen along the riverbank, as well as further inland.

Cottage Grove

Coming soon to Cottage Grove, Strawberry Fest debuts June 16 at Kingston Park. In the meantime, the City is offering smart irrigation controllers for $35 as the summer lawn watering season begins. Provided by the City with assistance from the South Washington Watershed District (meaning a discount), smart irrigation controllers are meant to help control water use, thereby helping both the environment and one’s wallet. Residents interested in better control of their water use and also water bill as a result, can head on down to CottageGroveMn. gov/SmartController for details and an application. Among the qualifications for a smart irrigation controller are the following:

• Owning a home or business within the City of Cottage Grove, with the home or business is connected to city water

• The home or business must have a functioning irrigation system with no more than 16 zone

• The home owner has an Apple (iOS 10.3 or higher) or Android (4.4 or higher) smartphone

•The property has Wi-Fi with 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz access, and

•The homeowner hasn’t received a smart irrigation controller through the program in previous years If that sounds like you, head on over to Cottage-GroveMN.gov/Smart Controller to save on your water bill today!

Newport

Coming in for mention from Newport, the City will be hosting a family story time on Saturday May 21 at 1 p.m .at the Newport Library

and Community Center. The event is open to any and everyone who wishes to attend.

Also in the news for the City of Newport, the Public Works Department will be flushing hydrants beginning this week and continuing for another two. The spring ritual helps ensure that city waterworks don’t have sediment blocking them as well as ensuring safe operation of the hydrants and valves. While it may result in a temporary discoloration of water, the city wants residents to know that this is the result of small particles and minerals being dislodged” during the hydrant flushing, and thus part of the process to ensure that water continues without obstruction.

The City does, however, ask residents not to wash clothes during the discoloration which might occur. Hydrant flushing in Newport is scheduled from Monday to Friday, beginning at 7:00 a.m. in the morning and going until 3:30 p.m. Those with questions are asked to contact Newport Public Works at 651-459-2475 St. Paul Park

Coming in for notice from St. Paul Park and something for residents of Washington County more generally to be aware of, is the plan by Xcel Energy to replace 5.5 miles of natural gas lines near Highway 10 and Highway 61, along with regulator valves in St. Paul Park and Cottage Grove, as part of the South Washington Natural Gas Project. With work beginning as early as May 9, the following areas will be getting worked on over the coming weeks by Xcel:

• Hastings Avenue and 1st Street

•Eighth Avenue between Laurel and Hastings Avenues.

• Hadley Avenue between Scott and Gary Boulevards

• West Point Douglas Road between the 80th Street Overpass and the Youth Services Bureau Finally, construction schedules are subject to change, with more information at xcelenergysouthwashingtonproj-ect. com.

Woodbury

Closing out this week with an update on the City of Woodbury, the regular council meeting agenda for May 11 includes city staff recommendation of final approval for the proposed 109-lot Copper Hills plat. Staff further recommended to authorize the Mayor and City Administrator to execute the Developer’s Agreement related to Copper Hills. The new 109-lot development by D. R. Horton will be going in south of Dale Road near the Cottage Grove-Woodbury border, and has been one of the developments cited in long-range facilities planning by South Washington County Schools, also known as Independent School District (ISD) 833. New roads and or extensions with the Copper Hills development in its final plat include Stable View Drive, Saddle Drive, Mustang Drive, Mustang Court, Shire Drive, and Shire Court—along with Brumby Trail. Plans for the development can be reviewed on the Woodbury city website, with Westwood Professional Services Ince listed as the civil engineering firm for the project. All told, there are five homebuilding projects to date for the year in Woodbury: Waypointe of Woodbury, East Pointe, AirLake North, Bridlewood Farms, and Copper Hills, the last still pending approval as of the Wednesday May 11 Council meeting. All told, the five developments and/or additions thereto, will add 497 platted lots to the community that began in its surburban context with Woodbury Heights.
