Park boys tennis now 2-7 on the season

The Park boys tennis team is working hard and improving with every match,” said Park head coach Tony Townsend.  Park is 2-7 on the season with a 6-1 win over Hastings and a 7-0 win over Tartan.

The Wolfpack had a close match against Woodbury this past Tuesday. April 26.  “We had four matches go to three sets and played extremely well,” said Townsend. “We came up short with a 2-5 loss.”

Drew McDonald won in three sets at No. 3 singles (6-2, 3-6, 6-1).  Noah Holmgren and Tommy Lucas won at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-3, 7-6.  Caleb Swigart lost at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 5-7.  Parker Jeseritz also lost a close match at No. 4 singles (3-6, 6-4, 4-6).

“We have run into some very good competition the past three matches,” Townsend said. “Losing 1-6 to Mora, 2-5 to Rosemount and 1-6 to St. Thomas.  Caleb Swigart has been playing No. 1 singles all year and has a great week of tennis.  He has won two of his last three matches.  He beat Rosemount by a score of 6-2, 6-4 and St. Thomas by a score of 6-4, 6-4.  We also found a spark at doubles with Tommy Lucas and Noah Holmgren who have won two of their last four matches.  A solid win over Woodbury and Mora by a score of 6-3, 7-6 and 6-2, 6-1.

“We have been focusing hard as a team with bringing that high level of energy every match and developing that consistency and continuous improvement,” Townsend continued. “We are excited and very optimistic for the next two weeks with getting some huge wins and taking that momentum into section play.

Woodbury tops Park in girls lacrosse

The host Woodbury Royals handed visiting Park its first loss of the season Friday evening, scoring a 12-10 win over the Wolfpack at Woodbury Stadium.

The game was tied at 7-all after the first half. Woodbury outscored Park 5-3 in the second half.

“Woodbury was a great back and forth game,” said head coach Scott Leonard. “We jumped out to a 3-0 before they came back and tied it up 4-4 and ended up tied 7-7 at halftime.  Their goalie did a great job in the second half limiting us to 3 goals and they won 12-10.  They dominated us on the draw and we had a few defensive breakdowns that cost us.”

Park fell to 3-1 in the Suburban East Conference and 4-1 overall. Woodbury improved its record to 2-2 in the SEC and 4-2 on the season.

Madi Brinkman had five goals to lead Park. Shelby Hansen had three goals and an assist. Josie Leonard scored two goals with one assist. Lily Newhouse and Maleah McMorrow had one assist each.

Aubree Laska stopped four of 12 shots on goal.

Host Park romped to its third lopsided decision in four games Wednesday with a 16-3 beatdown of visiting Forest Lake at Cottage Grove. Brinkman scored five goals and Hansen four to lead the Wolfpack offense. Leonard scored three goals, Megan Husaby had two goals and Ellie Shea and McMorrow had their first goals goals with one each.

“At Forest Lake, we got off to a slow start and didn’t protect the ball well,” said Leonard. “Their goalie made some great saves keeping it 5-1 at halftime for us.  In the second half we took over despite a great job by their goalie and finished 16-3.”

Park plays at conference-leading Stillwater (4-0, 5-1) this Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m.

Jameson, Bammert-Mueller, Ola-Kazeem lead Wolfpack track.

Park sophomore Rainna Jameson tied her own school record with a jump of 5-6 to win the girls high jump and classmate Zoey Bammert-Mueller won the shot put (34-00.75) to highlight Park’s efforts In the Blaine Invitational track and field meet Tuesday, May 2.

Park senior David Ola-Kazeem went to finish first in the triple jump. Ola-Kazeem came in with a best of 41.06 but soared to a winning leap of 43.02.

Park’s girls were sixth in the team race with 50,50 points. Blaine won the meet with 146.33, followed by, Andover, Champlin Park, Centennial, Coon Rapids, Park and Totino-Grace.

Champlin Park won the boys tram event with 154.33 points. Blaine was second, Andover third, Coon Rapids fourth, Centennial fifth, Totino Grace sixth and Park seventh, 25.16 points.

Park girls’ results

Tori Stepka finished third in the girls 800-meter run (2:29.13), taking more than 10 seconds off her seed time.

Park senior Finley Leick was fourth in the girls 1,600-meyer run in 5:45.17. Hailey Kieffer finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.09. Kylee Nickle was seventh in the 100-meter dash (13.62).

Park’s A team of Ameenah Alowonle, Susan Mbu, Madeline Finstad and Nickle was third in the girls 4x100 in a time of 53.25. The 4x200 team of Nickle, Annelise Faletti, Gabriella Faletti and Rainna Jameson finished fourth in 1:53.24. Park’s 4x400-meter relay team of Stepka, Kieffer, Mbu and Kalin Randrup was fifth in 4:39.92.

Savannah Brown was fifth in the girls pole vault with a best of 8-feet.

Park boys’ results

Nicholas McDonald took sixth (4:49.70) and Tyler Krogman seventh (4:54.99) in the boys 1m600-meter run. Eli Firchau of the Wolfpack was fifth in the 3,200 in 10:48.83.

Gavin Stauffer, Mason Allen, Brandon Carver and Miles Kasier finished fifth in the boys 4x800-meter relay in 9:28.55.

Evan Brummond (5-8) and David Ola-Kazeem (5-8) tied for seventh in the high jump. Ola-Kazeem placed sixth in the long jump (19-10.00).

Baseball team goes 3-0

Park High romped to two lopsided victories and a one-run thriller in Suburban East Conference baseball this week, knocking off Cretin-Derham Hall 17-4, outslugging White Bear Lake 15-11 and edging host Roseville 3-2 Monday.

The Wolfpack combined for 32 runs in the wins over Cretin and White Bear Lake.

Park improved to 6-7 in the Suburban East Conference and overall.

The Wolfpack hosts Woodbury Wednesday afternoon, then plays at Forest Lake on Friday, May 12.

Park goes 1-1 in boys’ lacrosse.

Park dropped a 40-4 decision to conference-leading Stillwater Wednesday, May 3, then edged host Roseville 9-8 Friday in Suburban East Conference boys’ lacrosse.

The Wolfpack now stand 3-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Park plays at Irondale (1-4, 2-4) Wednesday, hosts Hastings (4-4) Thursday and is home against East Ridge (4-2, 6-3) on Friday, all games staring at 7 p.m.

Park climbs to 5-1 in the SEC, 7-1 overall

Park (5-1. 7-1) edged host Stillwater, 6-5, romped past visiting Roseville 15-3 and ripped Simley 15-7 Monday, May 8 in girls’ lacrosse this week.

Against Roseville, Shelby Hansen put in four goals for the Wolfpack, Teammates Madi Brinkman and Megan Husaby had three goals apiece. Josie Leonard scored a pair of goals. Berlyn Giddings, Kyra Stofer, Ava Reckinger had one goal each.

Park goalie Aubree Laska stopped four of just five shots mastered by the Roseville offense.

Park hosts Irondale (0-5, 3-5) Wednesday, March 10, then plays at East Ridge (5-1, 6-2) in a showdown game on Friday, May 12.
