Park swim and dive team edged by Raiders

Like most sports, boys swim and dive is a game of inches. And those inches did in the Park Wolfpack Thursday against Cretin-Derham Hall at the St. Catherine University pool.

Cretin edged Park 93-90 in the close team race.

“I think I told them there was a lot of individual success and we can be really proud of our individual success, but I think ultimately where we want to go is more team success,” said Park head coach William Arnsparger. “That’s the second loss by less than five points and I told the guys we should be striving to make the little changes because sometimes the margins in swimming are one half degree on a dive or its point-o-one at the end of a 50.

“The little stuff matters,” Arnsparger continued. “We were just talking about controlling what we can control, making small positive changes so that hopefully next time we have a meet like that and tis close, that we come out on top. I’m proud of the way that we’ve all bought into our process. There has been a lot of tremendous growth. Great leadership again from our captains.”

Park senior Parker Jeseritz had another strong meet, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.18), the 100-yard butterfly (57.64) and anchoring Park’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Park won the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Lalee Yang, Ethan Cole, Luke Dockendorf and Jeseritz finishing in a time of 3:32.86. Park was second in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Cole, Paul Wallace, Yang and Dockendorf finishing in 1:51.98. The Wolfpack team of Jeseritz, Wallace, Alex Baraibar and Tyler Cracauer was second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.35.

Cole won both the 50-yard dash in 23.96 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.44.

Ethyn Schilling (220.10), Carter Darling (189.05) and Trey Jaso (187.30) went 1-2-3 in 1-meter diving.

“I feel I’ve grown a lot more this season and I’m right ready to be -- hopefully I can improve better for sections,” said Schilling.

Yang was second in the 200-yard IM in 2:17.08 and Cracauer was third in 2:23.56. Yang was also second in the 100-yard freestyle (53.55) and Dockendorf third in 55.25. Parker Steuber was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:50.95). Dockendorf was third in the 50 in 24.78. Wallace was second in the breaststroke (1:10.61).

Next up for the Park swim and dive team is the section meet, held again at Two Rivers High School on Feb. 26-28. The swim prelims are Wednesday, the diving is Thursday and the swim finals Friday, all starting at 6 p.m.
