After a rousing 16-1 season-opening win over Irondale, Park’s Wolfpack were brought down to earth in a 5-1 loss to visiting Mounds View Friday, followed by a 5-0 defeated at East Ridge Monday in Suburban East Conference baseball Friday afternoon.
The Wolfpack had trouble generating offense in the loss at East Ridge and fell to 1-2 in the SEC and on the season. Conference-leading East Ridge improved to 3-0 in the league and 5-1 overall.
Mounds View 5, Park 1
Mounds View scored two runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. Park rallied in the sixth inning but could only manage to push one run across the plate.
The Wolfpack loaded the babes with only one out in the sixth s three of the first four Wolfpack batters reached base, but Mounds View struck out two of the next three batters to quiet the riot.
“Pitcher (Fisher) Enberg and Gavin Aase coming in in relief and keeping us in the ball game, did a really nice job of that,” said Park head coach Dave Darr when asked what part of Friday’s game he was happiest with. “And we didn’t roll over, we didn’t die. In years past we kind of would have kind of tucked our tail and left and we didn’t do that. And we gave ourselves chances at the end there, which is really, really good. That was good to see that we had some fight and we battled and just needed a couple of hits here and there, but it didn’t happen.
Asked what he wasn’t happy with, Darr said, “Our intensity level, just our approach at the plate. Their pitcher did a very good job of setting up his curve ball and we didn’t swing at the hitting pitches when we should of, be more aggressive in the zone and then we ended up having to chase curve balls. We struck out 15 times but it felt ... credit to him. He did a good job. He was in the zone. Both of their guys were in the zone, and they challenged us and we just didn’t select the correct pitches that we want to be aggressive on. But that’s fixable. We’re still relatively young and that’s just experience and it’s a good learning took and we’ll learn from it and keep going. We’ll get better.”
The Wolfpack fell to 1-1 on the season while Mounds View went to 2-0.
Park 16, Irondale 1
