Boys basketball team romps to 4-0 start

Four games does not a season make. But the Park Wolfpack is rolling to start the 2025-26 season.

Park dispatched a good, physical Roseville team Friday, winning 76-63 to go to 4-0 on the young season.

It’s the best start to a season by the Wolfpack in at least 10 years. Park has had a pair of 3-1 starts in the last 10 years, but never a 4-0 opening run. Tougher opponents await down the line – third ranked Cretin-Derham Hall and seventh-ranked East Ridge come to mind -- but the Wolfpack have to feel good about their start.

“It’s a great group of guys,” said Wolfpack head coach Isaiah Wallfred. “They all play hard, they’re all unselfish and they genuinely like each other and they like playing for each other. A lot of guys these days just want to score their points and we’ve got guys calling plays for other guys to get their shots.

“I thought we played really hard,” Wallfred added. “That’s a very physical team. They’re significantly bigger than us, but we battled, we competed and I thought we played really well.”

The Wolfpack won it the way they’ve been winning all of their games so far this season, with a 10-deep roster that runs and guns and hustles and plays fierce defense all over the court.

Senior forward Aaron Sandin had himself a night, scoring 24 points to lead the Wolfpack. Sandin was 7 of 9 in two-point field goals and 5 of 7 from 3-point range.

“My teammates were getting me open on my shots,” said Sandin modestly.

Junior guard Griffin Sell came off the bench to score 16, while Brandon Bihm and Justin Ebbers had 8 points each.

“I think we played at our own pace well, we played really good defense, we forced turnovers and we just kind of dominated on our tempo, we just kept the right tempo the whole game,” said Sell.

The Wolfpack got off to a fast start and led from start to finish, but the Raiders hung tough until the end. Park led 8-3 early but it was a 19-16 game with nine minutes to play in the first half and 28-25 with 5:34 remaining in the half. But the Wolfpack then went on a 14-7 mini run the last five minutes of the half and led 42-32 at the break.

Park didn’t extend that lead much the rest of the way but never let Roseville get closer than eight points in the second half. The Wolfpack outscored Roseville 340-31 after the break.

The Wolfpack again made hay with their long-distance shooting, draining 9 of 21 three-point field goals to just 1 of 17 for the visitors. Park also got offensive productions up and down the lineup, seven players scoring at least 5 points.

“We have untapped potential,” said junior guard Carter Coombs. “We really have improved this year and I think that if we keep playing the way that we do we’re going to have a hell of a season. Everybody makes a difference, everybody contributes. No team can target one player because we can all be great.”

Park also forced 18 turnovers and outscored Roseville 23-12 in that area.

Park had double the assists to the Raiders, 16-8, but Roseville won the rebounding battle 43-27.

Finally, Justin Ebbers closed the comments, asked if the Wolfpack were going to lose any games this year, Ebbers replied, “Hell, no. We’re going to be the best team. Watch out.”

Park didn’t shoot well but made it up for it in other ways as the visiting Wolfpack went to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in Suburban East Conference play with a hard-fought 52-47 win at Stillwater Tuesday.

The Wolfpack made just 33 percent of their field goals and 57 percent if their free throws and were outrebounded 47-36 but still found a way to win.

Park made 8 of 14 3-point field goals to just 1 of 12 for the Ponies and that proved to be decisive.

Park led 26-25 at the half, then outscored the Ponies 26-22 after the break to earn the victory.

“We couldn't throw it in the ocean last night, but we guarded and got it done,” said Park head coach Isaiah Wallfred. “Guys played hard!”

Senior forward Aaron Sandin scored 11 points and Justin Ebbers 10 to lead a balance Wolfpack offense. Carter Cooms scored 8 points, while Caleb Sweet and Brandon Bihm had 7 each.

Park (4-0. 2-0) pays at White Bear Lake (2-0. 2-2) Wednesday starting at 7 p.m., then returns home for a non-conference match against Rosemount (0-1) Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. start.
