Park played sixth-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall very tough for two periods, but the third was another story in an 8-1 loss to the visiting Raiders Saturday evening.
The Wolfpack trailed just 3-1 in the second period and had a golden opportunity to close the gap when the Raiders were down two players on roughing penalties late in the second. But Park couldn’t manage a score in the final minutes of the second period and then the third turned ugly.
Cretin outscored Park 5-0 in the third to skate away with the win.
It was a hard loss for the Wolfpack who fell to on the 8-5-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in the Suburban East Conference. After a strong five-game winning streak in December, the Wolfpack have gone just 1-1-3 in their last five outings.
League-leading Cretin improved to 12-2-1 overall and remain undefeated in the SEC at 7-0. The Raiders only two losses this season have come at the hands of third-ranked St. Thomas Academy and fourth-ranked Edina.
Cretin took a 2-0 lead after one period and then led 3-0 early in the third. Caden Schwartz scored on a power play goal at 8:10 in the second off assists from Max Kaplan and Owen Corkish. But that was it for the Park offense.
Cretin scored five times in the third to take total command of the game.
It was a rough and tumble game most of the night. Cretin was called for 18 minutes in penalties on 9 infractions and Park got 16 minutes on 8 infractions. Several skirmishes broke out, notably in the second when a half dozen players tussled in the Cretin goal.
Park goalie Aidan Miller and the Wolfpack defense had tough nights. Cretin scored eight times on 41 shots. Park, meanwhile, was held to 20 shots, only one of which scored.
Park hosts rival East Ridge (6-8, 2-6) Thursday, then is home again Saturday against visiting Forest Lake, (7-8, 2-6) both games with 7 p.m. start times.
Park 2, White Bear Lake 2 (OT)
Park battled seventh-ranked White Bear Lake to a 2-all tie Thursday evening at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.
Senior forward Owen Corkish put in both of Park’s goals, the first at 3:11 in the first period which tied the game at 1-all, then the second at 4:31 of the third which tied the game at 2-all. Neither team could manage a score in the overtime.
Drew Schumacher, Eli Daly, Gavin Moss and Max Kaplan has assists for Park.
Hank Voss went the distance in goal, stopping 26 of 28 shots for a .929 success rate.
Rankings: Suburban East Conference teams are all over the Class 2A rankings again this week. Conference leaders Cretin-Derham Hall (12-2-1) is ranked sixth, White Bear Lake (8-2-2) seventh and Stillwater (10-3) is ninth.
