Boys soccer drops opener to Jefferson

Park played two-thirds of a pretty solid game in the season opener Thursday against visiting Bloomington Jefferson.

Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, the other third part, the scoring part, was MIA.

Jefferson took a 2-0 win from Park which left Park coaches telling the team that while the defense and midfield generally played well enough to win, the offense needs tweaking.

“The first game of the season, a lot to take away from that game,” said Park head coach Andrew Bourgoine. “Obviously we lost 2-0 and it sucks to lost that – obviously not a conference opponent but a section opponent and that does hurt for section seedings. But what I told them is if you play like that, possession-wise, we’ve just got to figure out that final third, which we probably had 10 to 15 shots tonight, which either got blocked or didn’t finish and the goalie saved and the goalie was pretty good.

“If we play like that and just tweak that final third a little bit more we’ll be just fine,” Bourgoine added. “We made two mistakes in the first half, we let the one kid get free which we talked about, and he shot and scored and then the goalkeeper made a mistake, it is what it is. It’s the first game of the season so I’m not going to get angry at the team. There was a lot of stuff in this game that was positive so that’s how we’re going to look at it.”

Park had 12 shots on goal, but none managed to find the back of the net in 80 minutes of play. Jefferson put in one goal in each half.

Park hosts a high-powered Minnetonka team that went 16-2-1 last season, reaching the state quarterfinals on Thursday then plays at Apple Valley Tuesday (1-0), both games with 7 p.m. starts.
