Park senior captain Zack Carr got his 200th win, then tacked on two more, but the dual meet results were mixed for the Park Wolfpack Thursday.
Park edged White Bear Lake 34-31 in the opening round, dropped a tough 36-30 decision to Coon Rapids in the second bout, and then fell to rival and fourth-ranked Hastings in the finale 48-24. Fourth-ranked Hastings dominated the action in the other duals, pinning Coon Rapids 55-11 and White Bear Lake 49-21.
While the Wolfpack had several outstanding individual efforts, Park head coach Jim LaBrosse said there’s still work to be done on the team level.
“Well, it’s good to have Landen back, he’s doing well,” said LaBrosse. “And Carr got his 200th win tonight so that was a pretty good accomplishment there. Certainly proud of him, he’s wrestled really well.
“We’re not wrestling at our best ability right now,” LaBrosse added. “A couple guys are. Jesse (Wright) had a couple good matches tonight. We let one slip against Coon Rapids, that one kind of hurt. We had them beat on paper and we lost a couple of matches that I didn’t think we were going to lose and we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to get better defensively and we’ve got to get in better shape, very evident today. And we don’t have much time, so we’ve got a little work to do.”
Carr looked strong Thursday.
“I’m kind of just focused on the little things of wrestling, just not really focusing on the result as much,” said Carr, now ranked second at 152 pounds.
Carr, who came into the season recovering from an injury suffered during Park football season, said he feels he’s in prime shape to make another run at state.
“Yea, especially with the injuries that I was facing before the season, I’m at a different level,” said Carr. “Glad that I’ve recovered so well. I’m not focusing so much on the wins and losses and just wrestling my best every time I go out there.”
Seventh ranked Landen Brooks went 3-0, including a pin over ninth ranked Rocco Iallonardo of Hastings at 145.
Park senior captain Jesse Wright got a measure of revenge over of Elijah Christopher Hastings ace at 189 pounds, winning 8-5 after losing to in the final seconds in a bid to go to state last season.
“Huge win, yea,” said Wright. “Lose to him last year to go to state by a point. Super big win especially since he was up a ton of weight on me too. He had about 60 pounds on me, but I wanted the rematch and I got the win from it. All the work paid off, and I finally got him back.”
“He wanted that match, so it was really good to get that one in, it was a big win for him,” said LaBrosse. “So he’s beaten their 215 and their heavy this year, which is kind of nice.”
Park ninth grader Jaxon Jubinal earned his 50th career win.
