Cottage Grove podcaster, librarian join to talk opportunities to learn more about Black history

Black History Month might be formally over for this year, but that’s no reason to stop learning about important topics in history and culture.

As such, Cottage Grove podcaster Sheletta Brundridge and Park Grove librarian Katelyn Martens-Rodriguez both talked up some library recommendations in a recent video posted to the City’s YouTube channel at CottageGroveMN, entitled “Black History Month at the Park Grove Library.” Here’s a little of what Sheletta and Katelyn had to say.

“I saw a few of my friends while shopping at Hy-Vee the other day and they wanted to know what’s the best way to celebrate Black History Month,” Brundidge says in the video, then recommending books at the Park Grove Library as a good place to start. “They have amazing books about African-American history,” she says, highlighting among others ‘The Black Church’ by Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., along with ‘Black History for Beginners’ by Denise Dennis.

Touching next on the Xfinity ‘Black Experience’ channel, Brundridge then goes on to recommend a new exhibit by the Science Museum of Minnesota called “Race,” which seeks to educate on the history which has been tied to the idea and what sometimes happened as a result of this.

With that, things return to the Park Grove Library, where librarian Katelyn Martens-Rodriguez showcases some of the available books on hand, both in February and beyond.

“Welcome to Park Grove,” Martens-Rodriguez says, then going on to show various items the library has related to black history and learning opportunities.

“If you’re looking for something at home you can see a newsletter that’s specifically about Black History Month, or you can see a blog post with a lot of different media to check out,” she says.

In short, it’s never the wrong time to to read a new book or visit a library.
