The City of Cottage Grove recently shared a statement on proposed changes to ambulance service, seeking to answer frequently asked questions.

Proposed Changes to Ambulance Service Area

Background
Due to the rising costs of healthcare, and the lack of full funding through reimbursements via Medicare and Medicaid, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) costs continue to present a funding and budget issue for communities across the country. As a result, there is a need for local leaders to find a solution to this problem. To that end, the City of Cottage Grove is announcing proposed changes in the primary service area (PSA) for emergency medical services (EMS).
For St. Paul Park and Newport, Fairview EMS will take over the Primary Service Area (PSA) for EMS calls in those communities. Residents of those communities can continue to rely on high quality, professional responses to medical calls while also continuing to receive mutual aid from neighboring communities when needed.
Cottage Grove and Grey Cloud Island Township residents will continue to receive Fire and EMS services just as they do today.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is this happening?
This is due to the rising costs of healthcare and the lack of full funding through reimbursements via Medicare and Medicaid. Additionally, emergency call volume has grown significantly.
To maintain reliable emergency response for city residents and ensure long-term operational sustainability, Cottage Grove EMS PSA will primarily include Cottage Grove and Grey Cloud Island Township. Cottage Grove Fire and EMS will continue to provide service via mutual aid to surrounding communities.

2. Is EMS service being reduced?
No. EMS service continues without interruption. Only the ambulance provider is changing for St. Paul Park and Newport.
3. Should I still call 911?
Yes. Residents should always call 911 during emergencies. Dispatch procedures remain the same.

4. Will response times change?
The new provider is positioned to provide timely emergency response to St. Paul Park and Newport, as required by the State Office of Emergency Medical Services. Response performance will continue to be monitored by each individual city.

5. Is the new ambulance provider qualified?
Yes. The provider is fully licensed, professionally staffed, and experienced in providing emergency medical services.

6. Will this transition provide both Basic Life Support and Advance Life Support?
Yes. The incoming provider offers Advanced Life Support services.

7. Why was this transition necessary?
Increasing emergency call volumes, staffing challenges, equipment needs, and financial pressures require City EMS resources to remain focused on serving its primary service area.
