A trio of senior swimmers led the Park swimming and diving team to an easy win over visiting Cretin Derham Hall in their final home meet Thursday night.
Park splashed the visitors 96-68 in a meet that really wasn’t that close at Cottage Grove Middle School. The Wolfpack choose to swim exhibition swims in the three final varsity events.
Seniors Tyson Kalinowski, Devin Schwartz and Nathan LeMay led the Wolfpack as the team improved to 5-3 in dual meets on the season.
“They do a really fine job, in and out of the pool,” said Park head coach Amanda Johnson. “They did a really good job tonight. They got to pick their own events but excelled at everything that they did. “Tyson got his best time in the 50 free (23.98) by a lot and Nathan choose some events that I was pretty impressed with, doing some distance swimming which he normally doesn’t do,” added Johnson.
Nathan LeMay won both the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.43 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.07.
“I think the amount of commitment that my boys put into this swimming meet, I couldn’t have asked for a better team because I ask them what to do and they do it,” said LeMay. “Despite us winning they made me proud and they really gave me that 120 percent.”
Park’s team Evan Darling, Kalinowski, Matt Glenna and Schwartz of got the Wolfpack off to a fast start with a win in the opening relay.
“With Covid and everything the season has definitely been different and it wasn’t certain that we were going to have a season to begin with,” said Kalinowski. “So especially us seniors are happy to even have a season. But our guys have been working super hard and taking advantage of every single practice so I’m super proud of where we’re at right now. Everyone is working hard and working to where they should be.”
Devin Schwartz finished first in the 50 freestyle in 22.58.
“The big goal probably for us three seniors is we really want to make it back to state or make it to state for the first time now that they have reinstated that state meet which is really exciting for us,” said Schwartz. “At first we thought it was going to be sections and we were going to be done. … we all three have a good chance of possibly making it back which is really exciting.”
Carter Darling of the Wolfpack won the diving with a score of 123.80.
Mitchell LeMay swam to a win in the 100yard butterfly in 55.96.
Park’s Matt Glenna earned a victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.29. Glenn had a winning exhibition time of 1:07.41 in the 100-yard butterfly.
The foursome of Glenna, Ethan Anderson, Evan Darling and Nathan LeMay swam to a fast time of 3:34.77 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Park’s team of Anderson, Mason Darling, Nathan Johnson and Carter Sommerness clocked a time of 1:42.54 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Park swims at Mounds View Thursday, March 4, to wrap up the regular season and then swim in the section meet March 10 at Oltman Middle School.
