After her four events were done, with assistant coach Jared Flaata standing nearby and East Ridge’s Laney Schwellenbach running past with a grin, Park’s Ashley Davis asked to start the post meet interview over.
Any why not? Davis definitely deserved a do-over if she wanted one as she finished her junior season by finishing 16th in the Class AA state gymnastics all-around. She also placed in the top 25 in two events and in the top 35 in two others Saturday evening at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
“I was happiest with my floor routine even though I didn’t score the highest,” said Davis. “I just like ending on a solid routine and I went last so that was pretty fun. I’d just like to clean up my bar routine a little bit more like straight legs, pointed toes. But it was still a solid routine.
“I’m going to just train a lot over the off season, and in the summer,” Davis said when asked what she needs to do to elevate her skill set. “And probably go to gyms that have pits so I can get some new upgrades.”
Davis scored a 35.725 in the all-around. She was 20th on the vault (9.3625), 33rd in the uneven bars (8.650), 35th on the balance beam (8.600) and 24th on the floor (9.125).
“She did great,” said Park head coach Ali Flaata. “Probably vault was her best event. It was a solid vault just her chest was a little low otherwise her form was great.
Asked what Davis needs to work on for next season, Flaata said, “just to continue her consistency because she came into the season with most of the skills she had here tonight. So, we just spent the year practicing and making them perfect. And so, she just needs to maintain her skills and then we have so goals on every event of things that will kind of take her to the next level. … There’s a lot more left in the tank, especially on bars. Beam she has a beautiful routine, but she can definitely throw in more difficulty. And the same with floor.”
Davis started the meet with one of best results, going 9.350 on her first run at the vault. Her second run wasn’t as high, an 8.075, giving her an average of 9.3625.
She liked her floor routine the best of the four events Saturday where she garnered scores of 9.2, 9.15, 8.8 and 9.1 for a 9.125 average.
The Suburban East Conference was well represented Saturday with Delaney Cunnington of Cretin-Derham Hall finishing fourth in the all-around and East Ridge’s Schwellenbach finishing fifth.
Owatonna won the Class AA team title Friday with a score of 146.825. Cretin-Derham Hall finished third, Forest Lake was fourth and East Ridge seventh.
