Davis soars to state gymnastics meet

With a rotation to go, Park’s Ashley Davis was modest about her accomplishments Saturday in the Section 3AA championships.

“Obviously I’m hoping to make it to state, but we’ll just have to see,” Davis said. “But overall, I’m happy with how it went.”

After the final rotation and the scores were tabulated, Davis found herself qualifying for state in all four events, winning the beam competition with a score of 9.275 and finishing second in the all-around with a score of 36.525.

It was quite a night for the Park junior.

“I thought it went really solid,” said Davis. “I was really proud of my beam routine at the end, so I finished pretty strong.

Davis will head to the state gymnastics meet next. The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul with the team championships on Friday and the individual and all-around championships on Saturday. The Class AA individual meet begins at 6 p.m.

Davis finished second on the vault (9.125), fifth on the bars (8.825) and third on the floor (9.3). She will return to state after finishing 18th in the vault last season in her sophomore season. This will be her first crack at the other three events and the all-around competition.

Always impressive East Ridge’s Laney Schwellenbach won the all-around title with a score of 36.925. But Davis wasn’t far off Schwellenbach’s pace Friday.

Asked if there was anything she would have done differently, Davis said no.

“I really like the environment, and the team was super positive and it was just like a really fun meet to end on,” she said.

Makayla Bollman of the Wolfpack finished ninth in the all around with a score of 32.5. Natalie Peters scored a 24.85 in the all-around, Clara Opichka a 24.675 and Audrey Reimers a 16.450.

“I’m just really proud of our whole team, we did really good today,” said Opichka. “I think vault went very well and our beam went good too. I think the best I did today was on floor. I made all my passes and it was just a good routine overall.”

“It wasn’t our best night,” said Park head coach Ali Flaata. “But Ashley had a phenomenal night. She made all of her routines. We had some great highlights. Not an overall wonderful meet for us but totally fine way to end the season.

“On floor we made all of our routines, everyone had a great floor routine,” Flaata continued. “We scored a little lower than we have been but they (the judges) were pretty tough on floor tonight. I think as a team that was probably our best event. Bars, we had some good bars performances. We had a little too many falls on beam. But the routines themselves were really good. ”

Peters scored an 8.400 in the vault, Bollman an 8.300, Reimers an 8.225725 and Isabelle Brown an 8.050.

Peters was 11th on the bars with an 8.825 mark, Bollman was 12th with an 8.050, Opichka 15th (8.000) and Kate Redmond (5.650).

On the balance beam for the Wolfpack it was: Opichka (8.350), Reimers (8.225), Bollman (7.775) and Eleanor Thompson (7.675).

Bollman (20th, 8.375), Peters (21st, 8.375) and Opichka (22nd, 8.325) scores bunched on the floor exercise. Alice Wood scored a 7.975.

East Ridge won the team title with 141.025 points, followed by: 2, Rosemount, 138.40; 3, Apple Valley/Eastview, 137.825; 4, Woodbury, 135.45; 5, Park, 135; 6, Eagan, 133.90; 7, Hastings, 123.575; 8, Two Rivers, 115.975.
