Davis to lead talented Park gymnastics team

Posted

Park senior Ashley Davis soared her way to multiple section and state honors last season. This season she’s hoping to take a few more teammates with her.

Davis placed 16th in the Class AA state gymnastics all-around. She also finished in the top 25 in two events and in the top 35 in two others. Davis scored a 35.725 in the all-around. She was 20th on the vault (9.3625), 33rd in the uneven bars (8.650), 35th on the balance beam (8.600) and 24th on the floor (9.125). It was her second year at state after finished 18th in the vault as a sophomore.

Last winter, Davis started the state meet with one of best results, going 9.350 on her first run at the vault. Her second run wasn’t as high, an 8.075, giving her an average of 9.3625. A fall on beam probably kept Davis out of the top six in the all-around, according to Park head coach Ali Flaata.

“Since it’s my last year, as a senior, I’m just hoping to stay like no injuries and having fun with my teammates and obviously improving,” said Davis. “My goal is first to make it to state, hopefully for all around and then I’m hoping to place this year on any event at state.”

In the section meet, Davis won the beam with a score of 9.275 and finished second in the all-around with a 36.525. She placed second on the vault (9.125), fifth on the bars (8.825) and third on the floor (9.3).

“She’s coming back with pretty much everything she ended with last year, she already has all that going on,” said Flaata. “She has already added a couple of new things to her floor routine. We have a couple of new things in the works on bars to raise her start value but otherwise she’s sitting at full bonus and full start value and everything else. Working on consistency.”

Senior Makayla Bollman of the Wolfpack was ninth in the section all-around last season with a score of 32.5. Natalie Peters scored a 24.85 in the all-around, Clara Opichka a 24.675 and Audrey Reimers a 16.450. All of those gymnasts are back for the Wolfpack except for the graduated Opichka.

“Makayla had a rough section meet last year but she could for sure be a contender for all around as well,” said Flaata. “She’s already coming in so much stronger and more ready this year than I’ve seen her in a long time.”

Asked her expectations, Bollman said, “Just to be a lot more consistent. I feel like last season since I was coming back from injury it was a little unpredictable at first. I just think it’s going to be a lot more consistent for me this year. I feel a lot strong, just more confident in what I’m doing. And I feel because of that mentally and physically I feel a lot more prepared this year.”

Bollman thinks her best event will likely be vault. “I would love to be able to go to state this year, especially for vault … so if I could do that I would be very, very happy.”

Juniors Ruby Igl and Peters return. “Both have some pretty high skill level on floor and vaults,” said Flaata. “We’re just working on consistency from them but they’re in the running.”

Although fairly heavy with seniors this season, at least two of the team’s younger newcomers could also make their marks for the Wolfpack this season.

“Expectations, I think we have a good shot at sending a few to state as well potentially being in the running to send our team,” Flaata added. “But more than, I have expectations that they all grow and learn and have a lot of fun.”

Park’s Makayla Bollman was fourth in the all-around with a score of 31.125. Clara Opichka was fifth (24.025), Natalie Peters sixth (23.8) and Savanna Woulfe eighth (22.075).

Davis was second on the vault (9.25), Bollman third (8.65), Peters fifth (8.475), Isabelle Brown eighth (8.3) and Eleanor Thompson 10th (8.05).

Davis was also second on the bars (8.6), Opichka finished sixth (7.375), Bollman seventh (7.225). Woulfe ninth (7.15) and Peters 10th (6.875).

Peters scored an 8.400 in the vault, Bollman an 8.300, Reimers an 8.225725 and Isabelle Brown an 8.050. Peters was 11th on the bars with an 8.825 mark, Bollman was 12th with an 8.050, Opichka 15th (8.000) and Kate Redmond (5.650).

On the balance beam for Park it was: Opichka (8.350), Reimers (8.225), Bollman (7.775) and Eleanor Thompson (7.675). Bollman (20th, 8.375), Peters (21st, 8.375) and Opichka (22nd, 8.325) scores bunched on the floor exercise. Alice Wood scored a 7.975.

Ruby Igl and Peters are juniors. “Both have some pretty high skill level on floor and vaults,” said Flaata. “We’re just working on consistency from them but they’re in the running.”

At least two of the team’s newcomers could also make their marks for the Wolfpack this season.

As usual, Park should be very strong on vault and floor this season. “We have some good beam as well.”

Park finished fifth in the eight-team section meet and the Wolfpack are obviously hoping to vault past that team finish this season.

The Wolfpack open the season Thursday, Dec. 4, at Woodbury. The first home meet for Park is Thursday, Dec. 11, against Mounds View/Irondale with a 6 p.m. start.
