Saturday, June 5th, the mercury played tag with 100 and the fire fighters were playing tag with training, and lots of water.
Chief Jeff Brown answered an online question about training in the heat.
“Why do the training today? In order for the FD to burn a house for training there is weeks of preparation that needs to go into the structure and completing all of the required paperwork and permits, for the City, the DNR and the MPCA. Because of the amount of preparation and permits, the actual training date needs to be selected weeks in advance,” Brown shared. “Once the permits are approved, we are kind of locked into that training date. Just like we don’t get to pick the weather conditions when the public needs our service, we unfortunately didn’t get to choose todays conditions. We are here when you need us, so we need to train like that as well.”
Crews had setup for training at a home on Military Road, just off Jamaica, a home that will be torn down for a future development. The training consisted of 12 lifesaving and firefighting exercises as well as training on how to stay cool and hydrated in the high temps. The training was successful.
