Girls lacrosse team falls in thriller

Park’s season-long story of excruciating close losses to the top teams added another chapter Monday as the Wolfpack dropped an overtime heartbreaker, 13-12, to visiting White Bear Lake.

Park tied the game with a second to play in regulation on a literal last-second goal by Taylor Siemer. But the Bears put in the game-winner at 1:30 in overtime to leave the Wolfpack frustrated again.

The 14th ranked Wolfpack have just three losses this season – but each was painful and perhaps none more so than Monday evening’s game – falling to No. 4 Cretin-Derham Hall 6-5, at top-ranked Stillwater 5-4 and then to No. 8 White Bear Lake 13-12.

Head coach Bailey Aasen reminded the Wolfpack that they have shown they can compete with the best of the best in Minnesota after the tough loss. But it was still a bitter pill to swallow.

“It was really tough,” said Aasen. “Like I tell my players, it’s what we see of their potential. We’re one-goal loss with some of the top teams that are in the conference and in the state. And it’s kind of; I tell the girls we know what you can do. It’s the things that they take away from it and learning from their mistakes. Some of the silly passes, or silly turnovers. They know what’s wrong but its now them as players to take it, brush it off and move forward.”

The two teams were dead even almost the entire match. Park and White Bear Lake were tied at 4-all after the first period, and 7-7 at the half before the Wolfpack took a slim 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter.

White Bear Lake then scored three straight goals to take an 11-9 advantage with 8:47 to play. It was still a 12-10 White Bear Lake lead with 1:52 to play when the Wolfpack rallied for two goals in the final minute of regulation, including Siemer’s last-second score.

Senior attacker/midfielder Sidni Gitzen scored three goals to lead Park. Maleah McMorrow, Madison Milosevich and Siemer each had two scores. Alaina Wright, Lexi Sullivan and Mo Brinkman had one goal apiece.

Lauryn Ehrenstrom had four saves in 16 attempts by the Bears.

There were some things that went wrong, but the Wolfpack did a lot of things right Monday, said Aasen.

“I thought we did really well on hammering on the draw,” said Aasen. “White Bear has a really great draw circle. I feel like we really turned it around at the end. Our defense, again, it was a pretty chaotic offense for White Bear. I thought they did a really good job of talking to each other. Our goalie with some great interceptions.”

Park (5-3, 6-3) closes the regular season with a game at Hastings Thursday, then plays at East Ridge (5-2, 7-3) Friday.

Park 15, Mounds View 9

Park outscored visiting Mounds View 6-3 in a decisive third quarter en route to a 15-9 win in Suburban East Conference girls lacrosse Tuesday at Cottage Grove.

Taylor Siemer led Park offensively with three goals. Maleah McMorrow, Madison Milosevich, Lila Krumrie, Morgan Brinkman, Alaina Wright and Sidni Gitzen scored two each.

Brinkman had three assists for Park, while Krumrie, McMorrow, Siemer and Wright has one apiece.

Goalie Lauryn Ehnrenstrom had eight saves in 17 shots.

Stillwater 6, Park 5

For the second time this season, the Wolfpack dropped a heartbreaker to a top 10 team, losing 6-5 at fifth-ranked Stillwater Thursday. The loss follows an equally tough 6-5 decision to sixth-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall on April 28.

Park took a 3-0 lead after the first quarter but was outscored 4-0 in the second and third periods. Both teams managed one goal in the fourth.

Morgan Brinkman, Sidni Gitzen, Maleah McMorrow and Alaina Wright each scored for the Wolfpack.

Lauren Ehrenstrom stopped five of nine shots in goal for the Wolfpack.
