Two road games and one home stand into the girls' lacrosse season and the Park Wolfpack are rolling.
Park opened the season with a dominating 13-2 win at Woodbury on Apil 15, then followed that with an equally dominate 14-3 win at Simley Friday evening.
And as usual, Park star senior Madi Brinkman has been dominate. She scored four goals in the season opener, then followed that with five more scores against the Simley Spartans.
But the beauty of this year’s team is that the Wolfpack are so much more than just Brinkman and one or two others. With a star-studded offense, two veteran goalies and a young but rapidly improved defense, the Wolfpack are going to be a tough out for any team.
“I think we’re doing a really good job at offense, our offense is definitely very strong,” said Brinkman. “I think it's hard for teams when we have so many players that can contribute and score goals and not just three players that can. Everyone on the field in our offense can score.”
Park jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one period Friday, led 10-2 after two period and 13-2 after three.
Josie Leonard scored four goals against the Spartans, Taylor Siemer had two, Sidni Gitzen, Alaina Wright and Maleah McMorrow one each.
“We’re moving the ball as a team much better now,” said head coach Scott Leonard. “Last year a lot of our goals were 1-V-1 going to the net. Now we’re getting some ball movement, swinging, making the extra pass and getting some assisted goals. Last game six to seven goals were assisted. The thing that’s happening is we had a lot of young kids last year playing attack and they weren’t necessarily catching the ball. And now we have seven, eight kids up front that can catch, pass, catch, pass, shoot so that’s been really good.
“We’ve just got to clean up our play a little bit,” Leonard added. “The sloppy passes here and there. Trying to force some things that aren’t there.”
Park goalies Lauryn Ehrenstrom and Aubree Laska once again each played a half and neither had to do much heavy lifting. Ehrenstrom stopped 1 of 3 shots and Laska stopped 1 of 2.
“I feel like our attack and mids are really strong,” said senior defender Hollen Thompson. “I feel like working on the defense is helping a lot because we have a lot of new defenders on our line and I feel like just focusing a lot on positivity in practice and working on just growing as a team is helping a lot.”
“I think they’re doing good,” agreed Brinkman of the Park defense with its three new starters. “I think as the season is getting farther on, they’re doing way better. We’re picking it up more. We lost a lot of defenders last year. So, it’s all new to them but I think that Scott has been putting in a lot of work with them and it’s been going really well.”
Park 13, Woodbury 2
Park opened the season in fine fashion, knocking off host Woodbury on April 15 and gaining at least a measure of revenge from last season’s section playoff loss to the Royals.
Park led 7-1 after two periods and 13-1 after three.
In addition to Brinkman’s four goals, Maleah McMorrow and Alaina Wright each scored three times at Woodbury, Josie Leonard had two tallies, and Kyra Stofer had one score.
Goaltenders Ehrenstrom and Laska split time in the net, each playing a half and each giving up just one goal. Laska stopped one of the two shots against her.
Park 12, Roseville 3
The Wolfpack went to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Suburban East Conference with an easy 12-03 win over visiting Roseville Monday afternoon.
