The Washington County Historical Society is excited to announce a free program on the history of Schaar’s Bluff by Herb Reckinger, Jr. of the South Washington Heritage Society on Wednesday, September 7 at 6pm at the Washington County Heritage Center. The Washington County Heritage Center is located at 1862 South Greeley Street, Stillwater, MN 55082.
What does Schaar’s Bluff have to do with us? Everything! Schaar’s Bluff County Park is in Dakota County west of Hastings, and Reckinger has done impressive research on the geological elements that characterize the area. From the park overlook, there is one of the finest views from that end of Washington County – the Mississippi River, Spring Lake, Cottage Grove and the Grey Cloud Islands. Reckinger writes, “Remember- the bedrock is the same in all parts of our county. We have many fine features that are not repeated elsewhere.” Herb will present on the Mississippi River Commission maps of the 1890s, the bedrock geology of our area, and the glaciers that made all of this happen.
The Washington County Heritage Center will be open at 5pm for event attendees to experience the museum at a discounted rate prior to the event at 6pm. The program will also be available virtually on Zoom. Please visit wchsmn. org/events to register.
Young as far as geologic time goes, this 1990 bedrock map shows rock breaks called faults, along with marine sediments turned to rock at different times. Since it was made as part of the Washington County Geologic Atlas, several more rock faults have been discovered, although no longer active to cause earthquakes. The program is free to the public. No reservations are required. For questions, contact Washington County Heritage Center Site Manager Emily Krawczewski at [email protected] or 651-439-2298. The Washington County Heritage Center is open for visitors Tuesday- Sunday from 10am- 4pm.
