The company that owns the Larson Quarry in Grey Cloud Township has a new name. Formerly Holcim US, the company is now known as Amrize. The new name, which comes from combining the concepts of “ambition” and “rising,” is joined by the motto “Build Your Ambition,” reflecting the mining company’s aspiration to lead North American construction forward, providing aggregate materials for a variety of construction related needs.
The North American spin off, planned for roughly a year, allows the new company a 100 percent focus on the North American market, as well a footprint and resources that include 1,000 sites and facilities continent wide.
Now official, the new company spun off from Swiss-based Holcim went on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as well a Swiss Exchange (SIX) as of June 23, a one for one share conversion being made for holders of Holcim US stock. The new company’s trading symbol on the New York Exchange is AMRZ, with the firm owning quarries in Elk River, West Lakeland Township, Shafer, Empire, and Grey Cloud Island locally. Amrize spokeswoman Jocelyn Gerst shared more on the what the rebrand means for local quarry operations.
“There will be no change to quarry operations as a result of the Amrize transition,” she said. “The same talented union employees along with plant management will continue to produce high quality crushed stone products for use in agriculture and construction projects across the Twin Cities. The majority of the products will continue to be transported to market via barging on the Mississippi river saving upwards of 20,000 truck trips (and the associated greenhouse gases) annually. Finally, our Quarry neighbors will continue to see the same familiar Company faces out and about in the community.”
The Larson Quarry has been in operation on Grey Cloud since 1957 and is currently looking to expand, undergoing an EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) review with county officials. A proposed expansion of the Nelson gravel mining operation into Pool 2 off Lower Grey Cloud Island is also in EIS review, but with officials from the city of Cottage Grove.
Expansion plans come as the current mine operations on Upper and Lower Grey Cloud will exhaust materials in the next few years. Alternative quarry sites in Coates township as well as elsewhere on Lower Grey Cloud, have been proposed for the Pool 2 mine, the firm’s operation relying on barge traffic for approximately 80 percent of its transport to market.
