Hale to the Bird 5K was scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 27 9 a.m.
Unfortunately for this year, icy trails and safety concerns forced 5K cancellation, after a late Wednesday snowstorm brought the white stuff to Cottage Grove. With volunteers on hand to help and Cottage Grove Public Safety directing event traffic, the 640 registered participants this year were still treated to donuts, t-shirts, and more at the Hamlet Park shelter.
Dating to 2010, the annual 5K event in Cottage Grove started with friends Matt Ellington, Adam Ellington, and Tim Mauer seeking an alternative to the Thanksgiving Morning 5K in downtown Minneapolis. Starting with 80 people in Matt’s driveway and with proceeds supporting Friends in Need Food Shelf and the Holiday Train, sponsors for the 2025 Hale to the Bird 5k include the following:
Arbor Hill Tree Farm
Incentive Realty
TMR Travel Made Real
SPS Metals
The Big Blue Box
Craftsman Renovations
The City of Cottage Grove
State Farm Insurance
Resilient PT and Performance
Sunrise Mental Wellness
The Hale to the Bird 5K race will return next year.
