Highway 61 crash results in fatality

One person is dead following a crash on Highway 61 on Friday, just after noon between 70th and 80th Street.
The crash, which took place place around noon, involved two vehicles, a BMW 328 and a Mitsubishi Mirage. The BMW was going northbound on Highway 61 when it hit the Mitsubishi, which had entered traffic from the right shoulder.
The Mitsubishi driver, 80-year old Sandra Lee Brunell, died, while the BMW driver was transported with non-life threatening injuries, per the Minnesota State Patrol.
Cottage Grove Public Safety put out a statement on the incident Friday.
“Earlier today, Cottage Grove Public Safety responded to a crash on Highway 61 between 70th and 80th Street,” it said. “Two vehicles were involved and one driver is deceased.
“The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Regions by Cottage Grove EMS.
“Minnesota State Patrol is investigating and has already begun accident reconstruction.
“Our thoughts go out to those impacted and to the community.
“There is no other information available at this time.”
The road was reduced to one lane following the accident, with traffic later resuming.
