Hopkins prevails on a soggy Friday night

Park got its running game going on a soggy Friday night – thanks to a monster game from Kody Aikens – but the defensive woes continued in a 45-21 loss to host Hopkins.

Aikens rushed for a whopping 228 yards and three touchdowns in by far the best rushing game of the season for the Wolfpack.

But Hopkins’ offense was even better as the Royals rushed for 239 yards, passed for another 123 for 362 yards in total offense to 248 yards for the Wolfpack.

It was the first win if the season for Hopkins while the Wolfpack fell to 0-4 this fall.

Hopkins got off to a fast start and led 15-0 before Park got on the scoreboard on a 7-yard run by Aikens late in the first quarter. The Royals then went up 25-7 in the second before Park scored again, this time on a 37-yard burst by Aikens, his longest run of the night.

Aikens scored again on a 2-yard run as the Wolfpack took the second half kickoff and went 80 yards before punched it in to cut the lead to 25-21. At that point it looked like the Wolfpack were in it to win it.

But that was it for Park’s scoring. Hopkins scored the next three touchdowns to put the game away. The game was stopped with 5:01 remaining after lightning was spotted. Play was halted for about a half hour before the game was called.

The turnovers and penalties more or less evened out Friday. Both teams had two turnovers while Park picked up 84 yards in penalties to 65 for the hosts.

Park sophomore quarterback Latavian Scott completed 6 of 13 passes for 45 yards but had one interception and lost 42 yards on six scrambles.

Kaleb Miftah caught three passes for 18 yards to lead the Park receivers.

EJ Lange Jr. led the Wolfpack defense with one tackle and seven assists. Wright had seven total tackles and a fumble recovery while Gheritt Museus had six stops.

Park hosts a winless and hard luck Wayzata team Friday, with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Wayzata (0-4) has dropped games to Andover (20-44), Edina (14-40), St. Michael-Albertville (14-15) and Moorehead (27-28), the last two games both losses by one point.

The Wolfpack now play three of their last four regular season games at home, all against district opponents.
