To the Cottage Grove Journal, Last week, State Representative Rod Hamilton attacked Governor Tim Walz on “meatless Mondays” and touted his independent credentials.
Hamilton does have a history of breaking with this party and was a member of the override six of six Republican legislators who supported a gas tax and overrode Governor Tim Pawlenty’s veto at the time. However, he also has voted for massive partisan legislation as well. This is because I brought his vote up on the 2011 redistricting bill back in May that would have gerrymandered the local area to protect Republican interests in giving Vulnerable state legislator John Kriesel (who was given $30,000 by the Republican house caucus for his 2010 campaign) a safe seat. In voting for this bill, he essentially believed that cities like Saint Paul Park and Newport must be represented by Liberal Democrats. Additionally, the vote means Franke should have never served in the state house as a Republican as the Saint Paul Park resident would have lived in a safe Democratic district had this bill passed. Therefore (just as I said in May), Hamilton has technically endorsed Democrats Matt Klein for the state senate and Rick Hansen for the house and Karla Bigham for the County Commissioner’s office since Franke is now running for the same County Commissioner’s office and Franke disobeyed Hamilton’s 2011 beliefs based on Hamilton’s own vote.
Thus, I accept his unofficial endorsements like I did back in May and hope he comes to the area to door-knock for all three. William Cory Labovitch South Saint Paul
