Something had to give Thursday when winless Park hosted winless Irondale/St. Anthony in a girl’s hockey matchup.
Unfortunately for the home team it was the Wolfpack who broke, losing a hard-fought 4-2 decision to the visitors that easily could have gone the other way.
“I thought we played pretty well, too, especially the third period, dominated the whole thing,” said Park head coach Bay Shock. “They get one opportunity bing gets in the net and an open netter and the game’s over.
“I thought we were going to put a couple in (in the third) and that would be it,” added Shock. “You’ve got to make that final step and we just couldn’t find it today. Molly Villas got her first goal of her career which was awesome. She dangled in from the blue line and got us within one and we just couldn’t seal the deal.”
After a scoreless first period, senior forward Shauna Miller gave the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead on a second period goal at the 9:47 mark with an assist by Shelby Hansen.
That lead proved very short-lived at Irondale tied the game at 1-all just 33 seconds later.
Irondale scored back-to back goals in the third to take a 3-1 lead but the Wolfpack wasn’t finished. Sophomore forward Molly Villas powered through her first career goal off an assist from Julia Menard to cut Irondale’s lead to one.
That’s where the score stayed until Irondale managed an open-net score in the game’s final minute. Park had numerous good scoring chances late in the third but the game-tying goal proved elusive.
The Wolfpack actually outshot the visitors 32-29, including a whopping 15-to-6 edge in the final period.
