Jameson leads gymnastics team to win

Park’s Rainna Jameson won the all-around, vault and floor exercise to lead a short-handed Park team past visiting Woodbury in a home season opener Friday.

Park competed without all-around standouts Emily Dahlstrom and Natalya Rugel, as well as just two events from Ashley Davis but still had more than enough to vault over the Royals, 130.425 to 120.050.

Jameson won the allaround with a score of 34.275, finished first in the vault (9.025) and in the floor exercise (8.750). Bollman was second in the all-around (32.750) and Clara Opichka fifth (30.700).

“I was happy that I kind of brought myself up from where I was at last year, so I’m getting more consistent and I’m getting higher scores and scores that I’m aiming towards,” said Jameson.

Jameson said she was happiest with her floor routine, but also liked how she did on bars.

“I was so confident that I was not going to make that first one (on bars) but I tried and I was so surprised that I made it over, so that was fun,” Jameson said.

Park’s Davis won the bars with a score of 8.3 and Makayla Bollman finished first on the beam with an 8.5.

Natalie Peters of Park was fourth in the vault (8.250) and Ashley Lentz fifth (8.150).

Davis (8.3), Jameson (8.150) and Bollman (7.750) swept the top three places on the bars.

Jameson was second on the beam (8.350) and Davis was fourth (8.2).

Jameson (8.750), Bollman (8.450) and Opichka (8.150) went 1-2-3 on the floor.

“Floor and bars were our most made routines,” said head coach Ali Flaata. “We’re short three of our varsity all-arounders are out. It’s a good start, it’s just we’re not at full strength yet. Not the best night but we’re staying right around the same allaround score with a lot of people coming in and out which is a good sign. I’m just hoping we can get back to full strength sooner rather than later.”

Park hosts White Bear Lake Thursday, starting at 6 p.m.

“I think we did really well overall,” said Dahlstrom. “We did have a snow day yesterday so that was one practice. I think we might have been a little nervous that we didn’t have a practice yesterday. But I still think the girls warmed up and competed really well. I think beam was a little bit of a struggle. We had a lot of falls that we don’t normally have. But that’s just a thing we can work on in practice. We can work on sticking those routines, getting consistent.”
