Hastings has busy ballot by SCOTT PENGELLY, editor Hastings voters are faced with choices in all four wards and in the mayoral race in the election next Tuesday, Nov. 4.
City voters will also be asked to decide on two referendum items, one which would finance expansion of the Hastings Public Library, and the other which would expand the civil defense siren warning system from one to six sirens (see related stories).
Voter turnout in Hastings is expected to be heavy due to the local races and referendums, and since this is a presidential election this year.
Hastings voters in the 1st Ward will choose between incumbent Hastings City Councilman Ed Karnick and challenger Michael Ring.
Second Ward voters will choose between incumbent Robert Kulzer and challenger Thomas Reuter.
In the 3rd Ward, incumbent Richard Collins is challenged by Andrew Klimek.
The 4th Ward race is between Richard Bond and Richard Pike. The 4th Ward incumbent, Ted Shannon, chose not to seek re-election.
“My four children are at an age where I need to spend more time with them,” explained Shannon when he announced his intention not to seek re-election.
“This is difficult with the frequent city meetings and constant request to check on something and respond with an appropriate action. Leaving the council should only improve my perspective on future issues as I intend to seek re-election in the future,” state Shannon.
All wards will vote on the two referendums and the mayoral race. Incumbent Mayor Walter Petersen is opposed by challenger Lu Stoffel., who is currently a council member from the 4th Ward.
First Ward voters will cast their ballots at Hastings Junior High School. Second Ward voters will go to the polls at Tilden Elementary School Fourth Ward residents will vote at St. Phillip’s Lutheran Church located near the intersection of 15th Street and Pleasant Drive.
Polls in Hastings will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters who have not registered to vote may do so at the polls (see the related story).
Transportation to the polls in Hastings is being offered as a public service by Schumacher- Keller Realtors (story continues).
