Spring is here, and with that being the case Council member Tony Khambata took time out to plug the city’s park system in the May Council update, with special emphasis given to Strawberry Fields, a new park located at 92nd and Granada.
“Spring finally decided to arrive,” Khambata shared with the audience from the City YouTube channel. “So I thought it would be fun to head out to the city’s newest park, Strawberry Fields.”
Opened last October, Strawberry Fields is located on the southwest side, reached by taking Hadley Avenue South and then turning right onto 92nd Street South. As it turns out Strawberry Fields is a toponymic (place-based) name marker, being in the vicinity of the one-time Strawberry Fields that gave Strawberry Fest its name. Khambata had more to say from the May Council update.
“This park is brand new as of last year, and has some really unique strawberry- themed features,” he said. “ and a great playground. Among the features of Strawberry Fields is a red and green climbing cage, as well as three white flower poles to mimic the strawberry plants. Placed nearby, meanwhile, are two picnic tables for parent and adult supervision.
Saying that the city has more than 30 parks, Khambata shared that, “the City Council prides itself on making sure our parks are well-maintained and that equipment is replaced if needed.”
Pointing next to renovations at Hamlet Park and a new shelter with bathrooms at Oakwood Park, Khambata invited residents to take a Recreations Survey for planing parks moving forward. Telling residents to “think big,” that survey can be found at www. cottagegrovemn.gov/recreation. In the meantime, it’s worth noting that the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Commission next meets June 13th at 6:55 p.m., with meetings scheduled on the second Monday of the month nine times a year. In the meantime, here’s a survey of some parks to check out this month, being open from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily:
• Hazen P. Mooers Park on Grey Cloud Trail South (Kayak rental)
• Settler’s Island (reached by kayak or canoe in Grey Cloud Channel)
• Ravine Regional Park (free the first Tuesday of the month)
• River Oaks Municipal Golf Course (good food and golf)
• Lamar Park in old Cottage Grove Last but not least, don’t forget about Strawberry Fest at Kingston Park, which kicks off in just one week on June 16. See you there?
