Learn about all things winged from educators at St. Louis’s World Bird Sanctuary during the “Masters of the Sky Weekend,” hosted by Carpenter Nature Center’s (CNC) Minnesota campus from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26.
According to Jennifer Vieth, Executive Director of CNC, there are typically six or seven birds that are involved in the event each year.
“Carpenter Nature Center’s birds of prey will also be making cameo appearances in the programs,” said Vieth.
Kelsey Rumley, World Bird Sanctuary Education Manager, confirmed that the final bird lineup is Alejandro the Harpy Eagle, Bella the Roughlegged Hawk, Duncan the Wedge-tailed Eagle, Charlie the Harris Hawk, Rio the Green-winged Macaw, Farnsworth the Barn Owl, Trevor the Eurasian Eagle Owl, and Forest the Tawny Owl. The birds will be accompanied by WBS Educators Kendahl Chergosky, Jen Sleeman, and volunteer Barb Slepecky.
In 2009, the first World Bird Sanctuary Event at CNC was created and called “A Gathering of Owls.” Since then, CNC has hosted the event annually.
Vieth said, “The only year we missed was 2021. In 2022, we hosted it in conjunction with the grand opening of our new Wisconsin Campus Visitors Center.
“The World Bird Sanctuary team sends at least one new species most years, so that it’s fresh and exciting for our visitors. This year is the first year we get to meet a real, live Harpy Eagle and we couldn’t be more excited. This species is very uncommon globally and there aren’t many in education programs.”
In past years, this event has sold out. Space is limited, and registration is required. Please RSVP by calling 651-4374359 or register online at carpenternaturecenter. org. Tickets are $15/seat or $10 for “Friends of CNC.” Carpenter Nature Center’s Minnesota Campus is located at 12805 St. Croix Trail S., Hastings.
