When you think of a powerhouse, the first thing that probably comes to mind is college football and teams like Alabama or Oklahoma. You definitely do not think of a plumbing and heating company located in Hastings, but maybe you should.
Sean Martin from Midstate invited the Journal to have a chat about the company, where it has been and where it is at now. According to Martin, Midstate Owner Ben Radant started it in 2004 as a one-man band out of his home. Within a few years, he had grown until 2008 when the big housing crash happened. He scaled back to a couple guys then.
At the same time, Martin was doing irrigation installs and things were going well. In 2020 he decided it was time to move on from an ownership role to an employee role, so he sold his irrigation business to Precision Landscaping here in Hastings and joined the Midstate team as a sale guy and project estimator, a role he really loves.
Fast forward to 2019, Radant had built up a nice crew of about 10 guys, moved to his current location at 3500 Cannon Street in Hastings from his home, and started seeing tremendous growth opportunities.
New housing is rebounding and the demand for skilled trade work is high. Martin and the office staff are currently juggling work for a crew of 32 guys. Rough in’s, finish work, new installs, remodels, repairs and service calls, you name it, they are busy from it.
They have an expanded service area covering most of the Twin Cities and parts of western Wisconsin. They cover far south as the Elko/ New Market area and of course all of Dakota County.
“We love Hastings, this is where we are from, it’s our community and we are proud to serve that community. We are very fortunate to have the ability to cover such a wide variety of services for all the communities we serve,” said Martin.
That love of the community shows with a good portion of their employees living in Hastings.
The biggest reason they invited us in, was to say thank you to Hastings and the other communities that have welcomed them and trusted their service. Martin also wanted to remind the students of Hastings that trade skills are a great opportunity for a rewarding, great paying career.
