Park went 1-2 in a four-team meet Wednesday, but all-time winningest Park High senior wrestler Gunnar Mullen had a night to remember.
Mullen, ranked fourth at 172 pounds, got his 200th win of his career, and highlighted the meet by taking down longtime rival Brad Little of Woodbury 9-6 in the match of the meet. Both wrestlers had takedowns in the second, but Mullen added other to start the third that eventually made the difference in the match.
“It was a good match,” said Mullen. “I caught him with I think a body lock and then a head lock and that got me the match really.”
It was Mullen’s first win against Little in high school.
“We used to wrestle in youth and middle school,” said Mullen. But then in high school he’s got the better of me until today. But he’s a really good wrestler, really good wrestler.”
Both Mullen and Little earned their 200th wins during the week.
“It’s pretty serial,” Mullen agreed.
Wrestling with some holes still in the starting lineup, Park defeated Irondale/Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village 51-24 but lost to Woodbury 44-23 and to Cambridge-Isanti 40-31.
“Woodbury got the better of us tonight,” said Park head coach Jim LaBrosse. “We still have some holes in the lineup but we’re getting closer.”
Park’s top wrestlers almost all did well against the Royals, with Nolan Bloch, sixth-ranked Kyler Jubinal, sixth-ranked Zack Carr and fourth-ranked Mullen all winning. Bloch scored a 15-0 victory, Jubinal and Zarr had technical falls as well. Park’s eight-ranked Dylan Richardson lost a tough one at 189, however.
In the final match of the night, Park dropped a 40-31 decision to Cambridge-Isanti. Bloch, Kyler Jubinal, Layne Frandrup, Carr, Mullen and Richardson scored wins in the dual.
