Meeting Thursday Dec. 21 before the holiday, the Newport City Council held a half hour meeting that touched on many things, including end of year awards. Local resident Pauline Schotmuller received the Mayor’s Award from Mayor Laurie Elliot for Schotmuller’s volunteer work, while Marathon Refinery received the Business of the Year award.
As to Schotmuller, Elliot shared of volunteer work by Schotmuller, saying in part that, “she’s helped shape Newport into what it is today, and she laid the groundwork for that small town feel that we all enjoy today.
Handing the Mayor’s Award to Schotmuller, Elliot then turned to recognize Marathon Refinery as Business of the Year.
As to Marathon Refinery and Newport, Mayor Elliot shared that after being at the business for an “elected official’s update,” the business had offered $100,000 towards updating Busy Beaver Park.
“We just simply could’t being doing this without this partnership,” Elliot shared of how things would be without Marathon’s support. “This is not something they could do locally,” she said of the park, “or even regionally. “They had to go out into the community, into the national area, and really sell this idea,” Elliot said. Then reading from the plaque, she shared with attendees and remote viewers what the plaque said.
“City of Newport 12023, Business of the Year. Marathon Petroleum Corporation St. Paul Park Refinery.
In recognition of significant contributions and support to improve the lives of Newport residents.”
Elliot then thanked Jackson for Marathon’s contribution to updating Busy Beaver Park, with Jackson sharing a few words as well.
“I just have some words of gratitude,” Jackson shared for Marathon. “I am honored to accept this award on behalf of my refinery team. We certainly operate at the pleasure of the community, and so our ultimate goal is to operate safely and reliably and be a great neighbor. And certainly receiving this award helps validate that we are taking some steps and strides to be that good neighbor.”
With 25 years at Marathon and five different locations, Jackson shared her thoughts that Newport was a warm and friendly community.
“Thank you and we look forward to a continued partnership with you in the years ahead,” Elliot told Jackson.
