Newly crowned ninth in the state rankings – one position up from last week – Park’s Wolfpack just kept on rolling Monday with a 17-3 road win at Mounds View.
Park remained undefeated on the season, improving to 7-0 in the Suburban East Conference and 8-0 on the season. That unbeaten status and lofty ranking will be put to its biggest test of the regular season as the Wolfpack hosts third-ranked Stillwater on Thursday, starting at 7 p.m.
The Wolfpack led throughout, going up 3-1 after one period, 11-1 at the half and 15-2 after three periods.
Park 7, Cretin-Derham Hall 6
Newly in the Minnesota girls' lacrosse Top 10, Park is likely to stay there for a while as the Wolfpack scored a huge road win Tuesday, knocking off host Cretin-Derham Hall 7-6 on overtime.
Park’s Sidni Green then drilled in the game winner for the Wolfpack.
“Very hard game,” said Green. “I think that we really played all the way through and never gave up, the ball, just making sure we went through, including overtime.
“I scored the winning goal on an eight-meter shot,” added Gitzen.
The two teams were tied at 2-all after one period, 3-3 after two, then Park outscored the Raiders 3-1 in the third to take a 6-4 lead. But Cretin won the fourth period 2-0 to force an overtime.
“Fun game,” said Park head coach Scott Leonard. “Those are the ones you love. It was back-and-forth, we were up 2-0, they came back and went up 3-2, we tied at 3-3 right before halftime. Third quarter we came out and played great, went up 6-3 and we were looking good and then our wheels kind of feel off. We didn’t take care of the ball. We didn’t get a single shot in the fourth quarter, and I think we had four turnovers. We get the ball and turn it over four times in a row.
“(In overtime) they did exactly opposite of the fourth quarter,” Leonard continued. “They refocused, we never dropped the ball, got a couple good looks. They were running a zone which is tough to get through. You have to pass around it We had a couple good looks and eight-meter shots then with probably 11 seconds Josie passed the ball into Sidni down low, and she got hit so they gave her an eight-meter shot and she ended the game with six seconds to go. It was a pretty goal.”
Madi Brinkman and Josie Leonard each scored three goals for the Wolfpack and Green had the one other. Maleah McMorrow had two assists.
Lauren Ehrenstrom had two saves against three goals allowed in the first half. Aubree Laska was in goal for the third and fourth periods and overtime and gave up three goals.
Park entered the rankings for the first time this season at No. 10 after opening the season with five straight wins. Tuesday’s win at Cretin made it six in a row.
Park 15, Irondale 2
Park unleashed a balanced scoring attack to overwhelm Irondale in a home game Wednesday.
Madi Brinkman led the Wolfpack with three goals, while Morgan Brinkman, Kyra Stofer and Josie Leonard each scored twice. Lila Krumrie, Sidni Gitzen, Hollen Thompson, Emery Lettner, Taylor Siemer and Alaina Wright each added a goal for Park.
“I feel like we communicated really well,” said Emery Lettner. “We just worked as a team and we went out and had fun. We stayed focused. We just worked together really well. It felt really good to be out there tonight as a team.”
Aubree Laska had a perfect defensive half for the Wolfpack, stopping both Irondale shots she faced. Lauryn Ehrenstrom had one save in three attempts.
