Park senior Logan Porter couldn’t explain exactly how it happened. All he knew was that he was pretty darn happy about it.

Porter slammed in a dramatic game-winning goal in overtime Saturday night to lift the Park Wolfpack to a much-needed 4-3 win over Roseville in Suburban East Conference boys’ hockey.

“I don’t even know,” said Porter when asked to describe the game-winning goal. “We’ve been grinding pretty much the whole game and towards the end there we just kept throwing it out front, capitalized on that last one and finally got the puck in to win the game.”

With conference-leaders No. 7 Cretin-Derham Hall, Forest Lake and Stillwater in the rear-view mirror – at least for the first go-round — Park played host to visiting Roseville at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

The Wolfpack skated poorly and got off to a sluggish in the first period, trailing 1-0 after one. But the Wolfpack caught fire in the second, scoring three goals in the space of three and a half minutes to take a 3-1 lead.

Park upped its play considerably in the second period, said Park head coach Jay Moser.

“Relative to the first it was hard not to play well, because we played so poorly that first period,” said Moser. “But they did respond in that second period and put pucks on the net, worked hard and it paid off.”

But Roseville answered back, scoring one goal in the second and tying the game at 3-all with a third-period goal at the 6:58 mark of the period. Both teams had chances to win in regulation but neither could find the back of the net.

But come overtime, it was the Wolfpack who emerged triumphant.

“It wasn’t a pretty win, but nonetheless it was a win and we’ll take it,” said Moser. “It’s huge, because we’re not an incredibly deep and skilled team so we’re going to have to work hard every night and scratch and claw for every win we get. And if we want to stay in the upper half of the conference we’re going to have to beat some of these teams that we’re pretty even with. So tonight was a real big win for us.”

Park improved to 2-3, while Roseville slipped to 2-4.

Nathan Donlon, Colin Jungwirth and Dalton Anderson scored second-period goals for the Wolfpack. Anderson, Samuel Janski and Jungwirth earned assists.

Park’s goals in the second came in rapid-fire succession. Donlon got the ball rolling with a score at 4:17, followed by Jungwirth’s goal at 5:14 and Anderson’s at 7:52.

“Tonight what we did well was moving the puck up the ice in the second period,” said Porter. “We started in the second and third period we started moving the puck up the ice and that’s where we really capitalized on their team.

“Especially with this group of guys, we’ve been playing together for a while,” added Porter. “It’s been a weird season, just getting into the swing of things. Every game we’re getting better, playing together better as a team.”

There were precious few penalties in the clean game. Roseville was called for just three infractions totaling six minutes and Park only two for four minutes. That of course limited the power play opportunities. Park was 0 for 2 and Roseville 0 for 1.

Roseville outshot Park 42-26.

Park, now sixth in the conference after five games, hosts fifth-place Mounds View (2-3-1) on Thursday, Feb. 4, in a contest starting at 7:30 p.m.
