Park’s swimmers continued to sink the competition Tuesday, swimming to their seventh dual meet victory in eight meets.
Visiting Cretin-Derham Hall was the latest victim, falling to the Wolfpack swimmers and divers at the Cottage Grove Middle School pool 96-85 in a meet that wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate.
This was a meet won as depth, as Park swimmers and divers won just five events, but swamped the Raiders with seconds, third and fourths.
“I think we have a good group of core kids that like to work and I think they like to win so I think that combination really helps,” said Park head coach Amanda Johnson. “I think they work hard at practice. They can push each other. We have a group of 10 or 11 of them when they’re not sick, here that can push each other. We literally have them go back-to-back-to-back and they really try to push each other to make themselves better.”
Mitchell LeMay led the Park charge Tuesday, swimming to a pair of personal bests. He finished first in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.26 and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly, out stroking teammate Matt Glenna in the fly, 54.18 to 54.34.
“Those are my two go-to events and I just got PRs in both which is very surprising because I just got back from an injury,” LeMay said. “I’ve been recovering for the past couple of weeks.
“I’m doing pretty good this season, so I’m pretty happy with where I’m at,” LeMay continued.
LeMay also led off Park’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, followed by Nathan Johnson, Ethan Anderson and Glenna (1:34.99).
“As a team I think we’re doing great,” said Johnson. “I think we could have a better backstroker, but we have really young backstrokers that are doing well right now and I think they’ll do great when they become juniors and seniors.”
Other winners for Park were Jackson Harre in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.71), Johnson in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.56) and Evan Schilling in the diving with a score of 148.10.
The Wolfpack improved to 7-1 in dual meets. Park has just one more Suburban East Conference opponent before swimming in the conference meet at Forest Lake on Feb. 10. The section meet will be Feb. 2325 at BlueWater Aquatic in Apple Valley.
Matt Glenna set a new Park High School record in the 500-yard freestyle, but the Wolfpack dropped a 99-85 decision to host Stillwater in boys swimming Thursday.
It was only the second dual-meet loss of the season for the Wolfpack.
Normally a sprinter, Glenna showed his versatility with a record-setting swim in the 500, coming in with a winning time of 4:48.34. Glenna also won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.35.
Glenna’s two wins were the only individual victories for the Wolfpack against a strong Stillwater team.
Park finished first in he 400-freestyle relay with the team of Glenna, Ethan Anderson, Evan Darling and Mitchell LeMay clocking a 3:33.24 time. Park was second in the 200-yard medley relay with the foursome of Glenna, LeMay, Nathan Johnson and Carter Sommerness in 1:51.62. Park’s 200-yard freestyle relay also finished second in 1:38.08 with the team of Anderson, Sommerness, Johnson and Evan Darling, Earning seconds for Park were Anderson in the 200 freestyle (1:59.19) and 100yard butterfly (1:00.37), LeMay in the 200-yard IM (2:08.35), John Jaso in diving (127.15) and Johnson in the 100-yard freestyle (54.14).
