On a Friday evening where the Wolfpack celebrated the careers and efforts of 13 seniors, Park cruised to an easy girls lacrosse win over visiting Rochester Mayo.
Park romped to a 13-0 lead by the half and substituted generously in the second half en route to a 15-2 victory.
It was the second lopsided win for the Wolfpack following tough losses at conference champion Stillwater and at White Bear Lake. Park fired away almost at will against the visiting Spartans Friday. The teams only rarely played outside of the shadow of the Mayo goal in the first half.
“I think they came out pretty focused,” said Park head coach Scott Leonard. “We talked about possession where we got sloppy last week with White Bear Lake and Stillwater, so I think we made a conscious effort to hang onto the ball.
“It’s fun to see them not trying to force a pass and waiting for a teammate, the second or third cutter not the first so that was good,” Leonard continued.
Junior Megan Maloney had three goals and an assist, while sophomore Shelby Hanson had three goals to lead Park offensively. Madeline Watters and Shauna Miller each scored twice. Recording single goals were: Nina Fragola, Ashley Kapaun, Laurel Watters, Kyleigh Mullen and Grace Norum-Tannahill.
“I think we really did well on transitions, we kind of connected the ball to everyone and although we dropped it a few times we were able to pick it up, move it all the way down and make connections down in our zone,” said Madeline Watters.
In all, the Wolfpack had 24 shots on goal, connecting 15 times.
“We really took our opportunities scoring and we took lots of shots and were successful in completely them,” said Emma Osland. “This was a game to really boost our confidence especially going into sections in a couple weeks.”
Park climbed to 7-4 on the season.
Rochester Mayo fell to 2-8 overall.
It was a good win, but it wasn’t a perfect game for the Wolfpack.
“I would say we definitely got a little sloppy on our checks and a little lazy just because we got up by a few points so that’s definitely something to remember for the future that we really need to clean up before we go into sections,” said Laurel Watters.
Park dominated Irondale 12-1 at Cottage Grove to win its final conference contest of the season on May 19.
Shelby Hansen had four goals to lead Park on offensive. Laurel Watters and Shauna Miller had two goals each, while Emma Osland, Ashley Kapaun, Madeline Watters and Josie Leonard each scored once.
Senior Ashley Penniman got the win in goal for the Wolfpack. Park finished fifth in the Suburban East Conference with a 5-4 record.
