Junior Leah Smith won the uneven bars and both she and teammate Emily Dahlstrom rolled 8.9s to lead the Park gymnasts in a dual meet against visiting Stillwater Friday night.
Smith’s score of 8.9 was the highest awarded on the bars Friday. She topped all Park scorers on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam.
Dahlstrom got her 8.9 on the floor exercise to lead the Wolfpack in the event.
Those two also finished one-two in the all-around for Park, Smith earning a score of 34.025 and Dahlstrom a 32.825.
Dahlstrom thinks the Wolfpack can definitely get cleaner and go higher, as the team eyes a goal of getting into the 130s.
“I think we need to clean up routines, make them a lot sharper and a lot tighter” said Dahlstrom. “Upgrades on bars, I think, and just staying on the beam.”
Stillwater’s Kendall Rogers was the meet‘s top allaround scorer with a total of 36.125.
The ninth-ranked Ponies also won the team event, 142.300 to 127.225. Stillwater had the top three placers in the all-around, followed by Smith (fourth overall) and Dahlstrom (sixth). Park sophomore Ashley Lentz scored a 29.900 in the all-around with a top score of 8.425 in the vault. Senior Kennedy Blaschko had an allaround score of 21.000 and earned an 8.3 on the floor. Breanna Mellingen competed in just two events but got an 8.3 on the vault. Chelsey Tirado scored an 8.075, also on the vault.
“I definitely think that we’re really coming together as a team really well and pushing through maybe our not so good events and just having a really good attitude about it,” said Blaschko. “”This meet I definitely think we really struggled on floor. Usually have a very nice clean floor and I think we had a few falls.”
Park’s best event Friday was the vault where the Wolfpack gained a score of 33.875. On the bars Park had a 30.075, on the balance beam Park scored a 30.700 and in floor the Wolfpack had a 32.575.
“We definitely did a better job at beam, we still have a lot of room for improvement,” said Park coach Ali Flaata. “But overall beam I’d say was the highlight because I think they really worked this week to improve and to stay on the beam. So we had significantly less falls than we did on Wednesday.
“Floor overall was just a little off,” Flaata noted. “We had some good routines but nothing like spectacular. Emily almost got that nine. We’ve just been so close, so she’s hungry to get up there in the nines.”
Park will host Cretin-Derham Hall and Irondale/ Mounds View in a three-team meet Wednesday, March 3, starting at 6 p.m.
Park also hosts the section tournament Friday, March 19.
