Three St. Paul Park, Post 98 pitchers combined to hold their West St. Paul opponents to a single run at the Park team salvaged a split in its 2021 season opener at St. Thomas Academy Wednesday, June 22.
The hosts won the opener 7-4, while Park dominated the second game, winning 9-1.
“Good start, new team, new season, new year, everything’s different,” said team manager Matt Doornink. “It was just good to see the guys I haven’t seen play before, get a lot of guys reps and get going.”
Park pitchers Brady Strand, Clay Beaurline and Sam Janski combined to allow just one run in the second game.
Janski also fared well at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring two runs and stole two bases. Zack Flattum went 2-for-3, scored two runs and had two stolen bases. Cole Kirchner was 2-for-4.
In the first game, Park’s Will Smoot was 2-for-3 with two doubles and had two RBIs. Ben Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Janski was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
Conner Mestemacher took the pitching loss in the opener. He pitched four innings, allowed four runs on four hits and walked three.
“We hit the ball really well in the first game, they just beat us, close game,” said Doornink. “In general, top to bottom, everybody contributed offensively and we threw six different guys on the mound and all of them were effective and produced. It was a good day at the ballpark for this team.”
Park plays at Eastview Wednesday, June 30, at South St. Paul Thursday, July 1 and at Totino Grace Monday, July 5, all games starting at 6 p.m.
