Park pinned in wrestling section team semifinals

Posted

It was more or less a repeat of last season for the Park Wolfpack in the Section 3AAA team championships Saturday at Woodbury.

Park looked solid in a 44-27 win over Eagan in the quarterfinals but then got stuck in a 50-21 loss to fifth-ranked Hastings in the section semifinals.

Hastings went on to pin St. Thomas Academy for the team tournament title 58-13 and advanced to state.

“The first match we wrestled really well,” said Park coach Ryan Duffy. “It was really close with Eagan early in the year, and Hastings, we’re a little banged up right now at the end of the year, kind of preparing for individual. But we had a few bright spots. Closed the gap a little bit. I was pretty pleased with our effort today.

“Zack Carr, he’s looked phenomenal all year and Jesse took care of business,” Duffy added. “Down low we had a lot of fighters today. I know they didn’t get a win but Nolan fought off his back really well, Aiden fought for the team. We had a couple guys we asked to bump up in tough situations who put the team first and that’s kind of really what we’re all about.”

Park had just four wins in 13 matches against Hastings. Nolan Bloch scored a quick fall over Rowan Henson at 114, eighth-ranked sophomore Landen Brooks had a major decision over David Bauer at 145, second-ranked senior Zack Carr earned a technical fall a 160 over Levi Hoffman and senior captain Jesse Wight scored a fall at 285.

The Wolfpack won eight of 13 bouts against Eagan, and scored big wins in that total, picking pins from TJ Richardson at 133 pounds, Jaxon Jubinal at 139, Carr at 152, Corbin Cortinas at 189 and a technical fall by Wright at 215 as well as two forfeits.

In the other quarterfinals, Woodbury edged Two Rivers 33-29 and St. Thomas Academy slammed East Ridge 51-19. In the other semifinal, it was St. Thomas Academy over Woodbury 41-29.

Park knocked off St. Thomas Academy in the quarterfinals last season but fell to host Hastings in the semifinals in the Section 3AAA team last season.

St. Thomas Academy will host the Individual 3AAA Sections Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
