Park shoots down visiting Eastview

This was a game to remember. Especially for the six Park seniors, four of which started Tuesday.

Park’s senior dominated class went out in style at home before a raucous crowd, blowing past visiting and fifth-seeded Eastview in a 96-75 rout.

You have to go way back to find the last time a Park team scored 96 points. It was actually six years ago in the second game of the 2019-20 season, a wild 99-98 loss to Hastings at Cottage Grove. And the Wolfpack likely would have topped 100 fairly easily Tuesday except head coach Isaiah Wallfred went deep into the bench during the final minutes.

Still, the lopsided win left Park players, coaches and fans smiling from ear to ear.

Senior forward Aaron Sandin had himself a monster offensive game with 31 points to lead the Wolfpack, but he had plenty of help. Junior forward Justin Ebbers drilled the nets for 21, senior guards Caleb Sweet had 17 points, Brandon Bihm scored 12 and Peyton Faber 8. Nine players in all scored for Park.

“Obviously we shot really well tonight, which helped” said Sandin. “So just moving the ball and getting open shots is how we want to play.”

Sandin drained no less than nine 3-point field goals in the game as the Wolfpack blew the game open with their outside shooting. Sweet had five 3s, Faber two and Bihm one.

“I felt we just couldn’t miss once we had that first shot go in it was like take it from there,” said Sweet. “Best win of the season for sure. They just couldn’t mess with us.”

The win over the Eastview Lightening lifted the fourth-seeded Park into the Class 4A, Section 3 semifinals and a date Friday at top-seeded Eagan.

The Eagan Wildcats (19-8) ripped Bloomington Jefferson (3-23) in their quarterfinal game by a 76-25 count. Third-seeded Apple Valley (17-10) took down sixth-seeded Hastings (13-14) in an 89-63 victory and second-seeded Rosemount (19-8) dropped seventh-seeded Burnsville (7-20) by an 81-71 score in other Section 3 quarterfinals Tuesday.

Park broke away from an early 17-all tie to outscore the Lighting 31-7 over the last 10 minutes of the first half. The Wolfpack led 48-24 at the break.

The second half was much more even but Park took a 52-28 lead with 16:33 to play in the second half and this one was essentially over.

“I think our defense was amazing and leading to transition points,” said Ebbers. “The transition points, keep applying pressure, wearing them down throughout the game and eventually they broke and we took off from there.”

Tuesday’s win was also eerily reminiscent of last season’s section opener, where Park played its best game of the season in a 14-point win at Rosemount.
