Girls’ tennis

Abby Fjelsta and Hannah Holmgren will represent Park High School in the girls tennis doubles state tournament Thursday and Friday at the U of M Baseline Center.

Park’s No. 1 doubles team, Fjelsta and Holmgren cruised through their first two rounds in straight sets. They won their quarterfinal match against East Ridge in straights 6-2, 6-4. They won their semifinal match against Central 6-2, 7-5.

The second-seeded Park duo then played top seeded Woodbury in the final and lost 2-6, 2-6. They played South St Paul in the true second match and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to earn the bid to the state tournament.

Kate Townsend took third place in the sections at singles. She beat fifth seed Claire Keller in the quarters- 6-4, 6-2. She lost to top-seeded Cassandra Li in the semifinals by a score of 1-6, 1-6. She then beat the No. 2 seed Morgan Redden in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

This gave her Townsend a chance at the true second match with the winner going to the state tourney. She came up short with a hard fought 3-6, 5-7 loss to end her season.

Girls’ volleyball

Park ended the regular season on a down note, falling to visiting Irondale in straight sets Tuesday.

The Wolfpack finished the regular season 4-5 in SEC play, good for sixth place, and 1610 overall.

Irondale ended the regular season 4-6 and 16-8.

“There was no sense dwelling on it, we did not play well,” said Park head coach Amy Johnson. “Bottom line we didn’t play well, we know we didn’t play well. We’ll get in the gym tomorrow and we’ll get right back at it and get ready for sections next week.”

Park opens section play Tuesday against Rosemount in the quarterfinals.
