Park 80, Irondale 40
Park’s LeMay and Jack Schweigert each had their hand in three wins as the Wolfpack swamped visiting Irondale in a Suburban East Conference dual meet victory Tuesday evening at Cottage Grove Middle School.
Park won the swimming and diving dual meet 8040, improving to 5-1 in dual meets so far this season.
LeMay swam to individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.39) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.75) and swam a leg on Park’s winning team in the 200yard medley relay.
“I’m not where I want to be right now but I’m proud of where I am currently because the times I hold is where I left off last year and I’d like to hopefully improve those times and I know for sure at sections once that does come around the corner I will do so much better than I actually thought,” said Le-May, who already holds the school record in the butterfly (51.05) and is aiming to add to that with school records in the 50 and 100 freestyles. “I know that times will be dropped and tapers hopefully really help with those times as well.”
Park’s Jack Schweigert anchored the 200-yard relay team, swam a leg on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay and won the 100-yard freestyle (54.46).
Not to be outdone, Park got championship swims from Mason Darling, Parker Jeseritz, Logan Schweigert and Jackson Harre in a true team victory.
“We have a top corps group of kids,” said Park head coach Amanda Johnson. “Mitchell LeMay is one, who is my senior, Mason Darling, who is my breaststroker, is having an incredible breaststroke season this year. Parker Jeseritz who is my 10th grader kind of popped out of nowhere. And then I have a couple of Schweigert boys that kind of are surprising me. Last year they were fast but they were kind of trying to figure things out and this year its clicking for them They’re got some muscle on them and know how to race a little bit better. It’s fun to see them in different events and see where they’re going to fit towards our end of the season.”
So, basically, the beat goes on for the Wolfpack.
“Last year we did lose a good group of seniors so coming back to this season I didn’t really know how we were going to do or what we lost,” added Johnson. “But it’s nice to see that there are other boys that have kind of stepped up where I have some of these younger ones that are starting to fill the void. They may not be fast this year, or they’re getting fast but not to that top caliber that we had. But they will be in a couple of years.”
Park’s 200-yard medley relay team of Jeseritz, Darling, LeMay and Jack Schweigert kicked off the meet with a win in 1:45.85. The 200-yard freestyle relay foursome of Logan and Jack Schweigert, Luke Dockendorf and Harre also won, clocking a 1:44.21 time. Park’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of LeMay, Damion Charpentier, Ethan Cole and David Laes swam a 3:32.73 non-counting time.
Ethyn Schilling won the diving with a 143.25 score.
Harre (2:04.13) and Logan Schweigert (2:06.06) went 1-2 on the 200-yard freestyle.
Darling (2:06.87) was second in the 200-yard IM and Charpentier (2:21.15) third. Dockendorf was second in the 100 freestyle (58.71).
Darling, who hopes to qualify for state in the breaststroke, won the event in a non-counting tine of 1:02.51.
“I’m really just happy with the team,” said Darling. “I think a lot of us have been dropping a lot of time this year and we all have just been improving a lot, and I think we all have been really pushing ourselves at practice and I think it’s really showing in the meets.
“It’s pretty much expected that we drop a little bit of time but I think we all have been dropping quite a bit of time and just with the effort in practices I think we definitely been exceeding expectations,” Darling added.
Jeseritz swam to a non-counting win in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.51 and placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:20.90) and second in the backstroke (58.70).
