Park wrestlers pin Mahtomedi, lose to Hastings

Junior Alex Carr knocked off his 50th win and 10th-ranked ninth-grader Gunnar Mullen scored a pair of wins to lead the Park wrestlers in a triangular meet against Hastings and Mahtomedi Thursday.

Alex Carr had two pins in the meet, pinning Mahtomedi’s Emmet Poppelmann in 4:28 then scoring a satisfying fall over Hastings wrestler Dylan Bartz in 3:50.

Mullen easily dominated his opener before scoring a technical fall, then scored a 4-0 win over Hastings’s Creed Peterson.

Park pinned Mahtomedi, then ran into a strong Hastings team in the meet at Hastings. The Wolfpack defeated Mahtomedi 53-25 in the second match of the night. Then, fifthranked Hastings looked the part in a 66-9 win over the Wolfpack in the final match of the three-team meet.

“The kids wrestled well,” said Park head coach Jim LaBrosse. “We’re a little banged up right now. We’ve had some tough competition the last couple of weeks, wrestling a lot of the top schools in the state. It’s been a tough little run. Now it’s time to get back to the wrestling room, regain our composure and get ready for next week for sections, so we’re excited about that.

Eighth-grader Zack Carr had a technical fall win against Mahtomedi, then lost a very tough 6-5 decision in the final seconds to a third-period takedown by his Hastings opponent.

“Zack Carr’s been wrestling, let one slip away today,” LaBrosse said. “I think we’ll get that one next week. Alex Carr has really stepped up this week. And looking really well. He got his 50th win tonight. Gunnar Mullen’s been a stable all year. We’re excited to watch him at 132 at sections so it’s going to be fun. Plus, we got Kyler Jubinal back today, too. We’ve been out with some of our key guys and kind of working through things so it’s good to have everybody back in the wrestling room and we’re going to get better next week.” Mahtomedi 53, Park 25

Pins by Kyler Jubinal at 120 pounds (2:56), Mullen at 138 (4:55), Sam Lankow at 160 (2:46) and Alex Carr at 195 (4:28) highlighted Park’s dual- meet decision over the Mahtomedi Zephyrs.

Zach Carr scored a technical fall at 106 pounds to get things started for the Wolfpack. Jubinal looked strong in his return, scoring a second-period pin. Lankow bounced back from a first-period takedown to score a second- period fall.

Park also picked up four forfeits in the match, while giving up one. Park bolted to a 47-4 lead after 160 pounds but had only Carr’s pin at 195 the rest of the way in the win column.

Hastings 66, Park 9

The Wolfpack won just two of 14 matches against the Hastings Raiders, Mullen at 138 and Alex Carr at 195 pounds. Mullen won a 4-0 decision at 138 pounds highlighted by a takedown in the first period against Creed Peterson. Carr dominated Dylan Bartz at 195 pounds, opening with a takedown and near fall before scoring a second- period pin.

The rest of the match was all Hastings, however, as the host Raiders collected six pins and won three open matches by forfeit.

The two matches were the final regular season event for the Wolfpack, who now compete in team and then individual sections, beginning with the team meet Friday at Woodbury High School, starting at 4 p.m. In the Section 3AA team tournament are: Eagan, East Ridge, Hastings, Two Rivers, Park, St. Paul Central, St. Thomas Academy and Woodbury.

Individual sections are set for Saturday, Feb. 26 at Two Rivers High School.
