It was a bit of a rebuilding year for the Park High boy’s tennis team last spring.
That construction continues this season due to some unexpected roster losses. But the numbers are good for Park, it’s just a matter of the Wolfpack gaining some experience this season.
“We lost two players,” said Tony Townsend, now in his 22nd year directing Park tennis. “Our depth and singles are a little down.”
Park has better overall numbers out — 29 compared to 18 last year, but many are relatively inexperienced at playing high school tennis.
“The future looks very. very bright,” said Townsend.
Leading the returners is sophomore Caleb Swigert who will play either No. 1 or 2 singles this season. In contention for the No. 1 singles spot is Oliver Cox.
The No. 1 doubles team of Robbie Menard and Ethan Lo returns as well. Josh Hess and Drew Mc-Donald may be slotted in at No. 2 doubles.
Noah Holmgren could be plugged in at No. 2 singles or teamed at No.1 or No.2 doubles.
“We’ll get better each and every match,” said Townsend. “It may take time to find our chemistry, but we’ll just grow as the season goes on. The biggest thing is we’re just super excited. They want to learn and they’re absorbing everything.”
Park is scheduled to open the season with a home meet Tuesday, April 5, against St. Paul Johnson. The Wolfpack will have eight home matches in all this season before section play.
