Robert J. “Bob” Paulson, an avid outdoorsman, loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend, passed away on Oct. 3, 2023, at United Hospital after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born on May 12, 1960, in Hastings, Minn., to Donald and Carole (Weitzel) Paulson, Bob’s legacy is one defined by his passion for nature, family, and the simple joys of life.

Bob’s early years were led by his elementary education in Woodbury before graduating from Park High School. He united in marriage with his beloved Mary Sue McCormick at the United Church of Christ in Cottage Grove, from which their union blossomed into the gift of two sons; Michael and Daniel.

Professionally, Bob displayed his skill and dedication through various ventures. Beginning at Beeline Auto, he honed his craft in auto frame straightening and repair. Later, he transitioned to the art of flooring, becoming a sub-contractor renowned for his expertise in carpet, tile, and vinyl installation.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bob’s heart belonged to the great outdoors. An annual highlight for him was the deer hunting season, a cherished tradition where he reveled not just in the pursuit of game but in the camaraderie shared with his boys, relatives, and friends. Wetting a line in pursuit of pan fish or elusive trout on the Rush River brought him immeasurable joy also.

Bob’s commitment extended to his role as a hands-on dad, coaching his boys in sports and supporting every facet of their lives. He even played a pivotal role in the founding of the local hockey team, the Pierce County Bears. When the boys were young, weekends were often spent camping up north, with the musical company of Elvis on the journey up AND back.

In the realm of sports, Bob found himself at odds with his wife’s allegiance to the Green Bay Packers, proudly standing as a true Minnesota Vikings fan. His interests weren’t confined to the outdoors; he enjoyed the art of tinkering, whether in his shed, crafting woodwork, or welding. His love for cars was evident in the pride he took in his recent acquisition, a ’69 Chevelle.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife Mary Sue, sons Michael (Erin McNiff) of Ellsworth, Daniel (Elizabeth) of Eau Claire, and grandchildren Finn and Faye. He is also remembered by his siblings Don (Cathy) Paulson of Hastings, Deb McCoy of St. Paul Park, Nita (Mike) Bertram of Somerset, Lisa (Wayne) Christen of Balsam Lake, stepmother Lorna Paulson and stepsister Tamra (John) Sarnstrom. Many nieces and nephews also cherish the memory of their beloved uncle. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Carole, baby brother Joseph, stepfather Rob Biscoe, and brother-in-law Chris McCoy.

A memorial Service for Bob Paulson was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10 at United Church of Christ in Cottage Grove. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials will be shared to further Bob’s interests in life. Interment will be private at some of the most memorable locations in his life. Cremation and memorial services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Ellsworth.
