Roseville dashes Park’s plans for a win

The frustration was etched deep on the faces of the Wolfpack after Friday’s game.

Park played well enough to win Friday, both on offense and defense, but some execution errors and some special team lapses at key times cost the Wolfpack in a 17-0 loss to host Roseville.

Park and Roseville were almost dead even in plays (59-51), total yards (192-190), third down efficiency (5-14 vs. 4-11, both 36 percent), turnovers (0-0) and penalties (Park 3-35 yards, Roseville 5 for 60 yards).

But the Wolfpack just couldn’t capitalize on their scoring opportunities while the Raiders did just that, and that was enough to pull out the victory.

“Turnovers) and some bounces at the inopportune moments obviously,” said head coach Rick Fryklund. But I continued to tell them, I continue to believe it in my heart that we are very, very close to achieving our capability. We just need everyone on the same play to do that, and we are very close to achieving our potential and the things we need to fix like turnovers, those are all in our control.

“We’re not playing the Green Bay Packers and we can’t expect to win, and no disrespect to Roseville, because I think nothing but great things for coach Stevenson and what he’s done here,” Fryklund continued. “But we have some very fixable things. … Our kids are playing hard. I know I’ve said that over and over, but they are playing hard and we’re fighting even if the record doesn’t always indicate that.”

Park fell to 0-7 on the season, while Roseville won its first game to go to 1-6.

After a scoreless first quarter, Roseville got on the scoreboard first with a safety on the first play of the second quarter.

Roseville then made it an 8-0 game by completing a 36-yard flea flicker scoring pass with 2:3 to play in the second quarter. Park moved all the way down to the shadow of the Roseville goalposts following the play, but a short field gal was blocked and Roseville took an 8-0 lead into halftime.

Things went from bad but manageable for Park to worse when Roseville’s Aiden Kempe took a punt 90 yards for a second Raiders touchdown with 8:02 left in the third quarter. Roseville threatened again late in the quarter after a botched Park punt, but the Wolfpack kept the Raiders out of the end zone.

Roseville then wrapped up the scoring with a 28-yard field goal in the fourth.

“I’m feeling great, just to get back on this field just amazing, love playing out here with my brothers, love the game of football, it just feels better than ever,” said senior running back Kody Aikens, who had a huge night after returning from injury. “

Aikens led Park with 114 yards rushing on 23 carries, caught four passes for 47 yards, and had 9 yards in kickoff returns, giving him an offensive night of 170 total yards.

“It’s honestly so frustrating,” said Aikens. “Coming out here, we were thinking we were hoping we were going to get a win. Coming here zero-and-six, frustrating is the right word. It sucks to come out here and we don’t do our right jobs and we’re … it’s just not the team that we are at heart and it just sucks.”

Matthew Kamande went all the way at quarterback Friday, completing 8 of 14 passes for 77 yards, with a long of 26 yards to Aikens. Kamande didn’t have as much success running the ball, losing 7 yards on 16 attempts.

Senior linebackers EJ Lange Jr. and Lance Hayes both had strong game to lead the Park defense. Lange finished with seven tackles, two assists and a tackle for loss. Hayes had three solos and eighth assists for 11 total tackles. Jacob Chipman has seven stops, Gheritt Museus six, Jarius Boston and Nolan Sease five stops each. Boston also had two tackles for losses.

“At this point we’ve just got to know what we’ve got to offer,” said Lange. “I mean at the end of the day, even if we’re playing some bigger schools or some smaller schools it’ our best 11 vs. their best 11. And we’ve just got to get all the guys behind the fact that we’ve got nothing to lose and we just got to go out there and keep pushing hard because we know we know it's not the team we are we’ve just got to prove it to everyone else.”

Park hosts Eastview (2-3) in the regular season finale Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m. Eastview got steamrolled by eighth ranked Eden Prairie 35-12 in its last outing, but also has wins over Roseville and Coon Rapids, both of whom defeated Park.

“He (coach Fryklund) talked about how we out up a fight, and that if we just execute, everyone executes their assignments that we can win football games,” said defensive lineman Robert Schmitzer. “Just a couple big plays that we made mistakes. Like I said, just one or two big plays and the game’s a one score game.”
