Silvis, Mullen lead five Park wrestlers to state

It was a record-setting day for Park senior Zach Silvis and a glimpse of the future for Park wrestling led by freshman Gunner Mullen, each winning in dominate fashion Saturday in the individual wrestling sections Saturday at Two Rivers.

Silvis and Mullen led Park’s state qualifiers. Also qualifying for state were Zach Carr at 106, Will Deutsch at 145 pounds and Alex Carr at 195 pounds. It all paints a bright present, and future, for Park with just two seniors in a 13-man lineup.

“We did good today,” said Park head coach Jim LaBrosse. “We’re sending five, as young a team as we are, is good. The boys wanted six but we’ll have to wait another year or two for that.”

Silvis capped the day by setting the school record for pins with 73 falls, the last coming appropriately enough in the finals of the 120-pound match.

“I’ve been trying to get it (the record) for a while,” Silvis said. “The injury didn’t help it. I had to sit out for a few matches right after I hurt my shoulder. I knew it was going to be close. I knew I had to either get it here or somehow get it at state.”

Silvis is Park’s first four-time section champion.

Silvis (39-1) looked strong despite the slight shoulder tear that he kept iced when not on the mat. He won the section title at 120 pounds, while Mullen cruised to a championship at 132-pounds.

“When I’m wrestling, I don’t really feel it much,” said Silvis. “It’s more like after the adrenaline wears off. After my matches it starts getting really tight and sore.”

Silvis won three times, taking the 120-pound crown with a 50-second pin against Mark Svoboda of Hastings in the finals. He scored a 17-second pin and an 11-1 major decision in his second match.

Mullen dominated his weight class, scoring a 15-0 technical fall in the finals over Colton Zwiefel of St. Thomas Academy to improve to 39-10 on the season. Mullen had a first-round bye then won 9-4 in the semifinals to advance where he won in 5:17.

LaBrosse said Mullen has an excellent chance to be Park’s next four-time section champion.

“He looked really well, he beat some good kids today,” said LaBrosse.

Alex Carr pinned his first-round opponent in 1:46 and then scored a 9-3 decision in the semifinals to advance.

Park results: 106 — Zach Carr (35-8) of Park took second at 106 pounds. Carr lost on a fall in 50 seconds in the finals to Blake Beissel of Hastings. Carr won a 13-9 decision over Dylan St. Germain of Eagan to finish second.

113 – Ninth grader Kyler Jubinal (20-9) of Park finished third at 113. Jubinal was pinned in 3:03 in the second-place match by Trey Beissel of Hastings.

120 – Silvis won the title with a pin in 50 seconds in the final.

126 – Freshman Joey Chilton (13-16) of Park finished fourth. Chilton was pinned in 1:40 in the third-place match to Trey Sann of Two Rivers.

132 – Mullen breezed to the title with a 15-0 technical fall in the finals.

138 – Freshman LeRoy Olson (17-16) finished fifth. He pinned Kaiden Kirby of Woodbury in the fifth-place match in 3:17.

170 – Senior Dom Atkins (9-24) lost on a fall in the third-place match to Cam Steffel of East Ridge to finish fourth at 160 pounds.

195 – Alex Carr (31-19) placed second, losing an 8-3 decision in the 185-pound finals to Jackson Cercioglu of St. Thomas Academy. Carr, a junior, won the second- place match to Tyler Miller of Hastings. 285 — Doug Sabin (14-22) was fifth at 285, pinning Daevon Goodlow of St. Paul Central in 1:29 in the fifth-place match.
