A state championship was not to be for Park’s all-time leading pin winner, senior Zach Silvis.
Prior Lake’s top-ranked Alan Koehler (43-1) edged Silvis 3-1 for the Class AAA 120-pound title in Saturday’s finals.
After a scoreless first period, Koehler went up 1-0 on a second-period escape. Koehler then had a takedown at the 1:05 mark of the third period. Silvis had an escape early in the third period to close tie it at 1-all, but Koehler scored a takedown with a minute left to salt the victory away.
Koehler edged Silvis twice this season for the Park senior’s only losses this winter. Koehler scored a 5-4 decision in the 2021 Minnesota Christmas Tournament.
Silvis finished his senior season 42-2.
Silvis advanced with an 8-0 major decision over ninthranked Connor Peterson of Maple Grove in the first round and followed that with a 9-3 win in the quarterfinals over sixth-ranked Keiichi Kong of Apple Valley. Silvis then scored a 4-2 decision against Stillwater’s fourth-ranked Sam Bethke in the semifinals. Silvis was 4-0 against Bethke the last two seasons.
Silvis finished as a threetime state tournament place-winner. He was sixth at 106 in 2020, third at 120 in 2021 and second this season at 120.
Silvis had two takedowns and a near fall in his match against Peterson. He followed that with another lopsided victory against Kong, again scoring a pair of takedowns and a second period near fall. Against Bethke in the semi-finals Carr had a pair of first-period takedowns to build a 4-1 lead after one.
Except for Silvis it was a bit of a rugged tournament Friday and Saturday for the other four Park wrestlers.
106 – Eighth grader Zach Carr (35-10) lost on an 18-3 technical fall in the first round to fifth-ranked Luke Koenen of Wayzata. Koenen went on to finish third in the tournament. Koenen scored four takedowns in the first period against Carr. Carr then dropped a 2-0 decision to Mikey Jelinek of Stillwater in consolation.
132 – Ninth grade wrestler and section champion Gunnar Mullen (39-11) dropped a 14-2 first-round major decision to 10th-ranked Cittadino Tuttle of Stillwater. Tuttle dominated the action in the first period, scoring a takedown, a 3-point near fall and a 2-point near fall. Mullen was blanked until scoring a third-period takedown.
145 – Junior Will Deutsch (21-22) lost a tough one at 145 pounds, falling 2-0 to ninth-rated Bradee Dwinell of Waconia. Dwinell scored a first-period takedown for the only points of the match.
195 – Park’s Alex Carr went 0-2 in the tournament to finish 31-21 on the season. Carr lost 3-0 to ninth-ranked Macray Klohs of Buffalo in the opening round, all points coming in the second period. Then in a consolation match, Carr dropped a 10-2 decision to third-ranked Jacob Solheim of Mounds View to be eliminated from the tournament. Solheim scored a first-period takedown and a second period near fall to build a 5-0 lead, then added another near fall in the third. Carr will be back for his senior season next year.
