Losing at home to visiting fourth-ranked Stillwater last Wednesday was bad, but falling at unranked East Ridge on Monday made it worse. It was a tough week for the Wolfpack.
Stillwater 7, Park 3
Stillwater rallied from a 2-1 deficit after five innings with wo runs in the sixth and then blew the game wide open with four runs in the eighth inning.
The Ponies led 1-0 after two innings but Park took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by junior catcher Alata Adamez. Stillwater came right back in the top of the sixth to claim a 3-2 edge.
But the Wolfpack also had a rally in themselves and scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to send it into extra innings. Adamez walked, advanced on a single by Lauren Osland and came in to score.
But the eighth inning was a disaster for the Wolfpack. Still strung together three singles then won it on a two-out four-run home run. Park went down mostly quietly in the bottom of the eighth with just one walk in four at-bats to end it.
“We have a lot of the little things to clean up, and the difference was they had a lot of two-out hits and we struggled with two outs,” said Park head coach Tony Young. “You know we’re in every game we play and then we run into that crooked inning that we have to fix. And it’s a mind set and we’re working on it. It’s going to come; it’s going to come. The girls are working hard, they’re believing in what we’re saying. It’s just going to take some time.”
“Like I said, two outs, we just need to shut the door on them,” said Park sophomore pitcher Stella Fritsche. “And we’ll practice that and it will get better.
“We’re right there and we just need to have the little plays and make the little adjustments and then we’ll be there,” Fritsche continued.
East Ridge 2, Park 1
The Wolfpack dropped a second-straight tough decision, falling at East Ridge y a 2-1 count Monday afternoon.
Park slipped to 3-3 in the Suburban East Conference and 4-3 overall. East Ridge went to 5-2 in the league and 6-2 on the season.
Park plays at White Bear Lake (2-4, 2-4) Wednesday, hosts Irondale (0-6, 1-7) Friday, then is at Mounds View (1-6, 1-6) on Monday, all games stating at 4:30 p.m.
