Park wrestlers score team title at South St. Paul

Park High’s wrestlers capped a busy week with the team title Saturday in the Veldman Invite at South St. Paul.

Gunnar Mullen led the way with a 5-2 decision over Aiden Herbst of Buffalo to win the first-place match at 152 pounds.

Park won the 17-team championship with 224.5 points. Host South St. Paul was second with 208 and White Bear Lake third with 141.5.

Wrestling at Hastings Friday, Mullen had a technical fall at 152 pounds, while Dylan Richardson scored a 12-1 at 160 pounds to highlight Park’s match. Zack Carr had Park’s only other win, a 5-3 decision at 139 pounds.

Hastings won a 37-12 team decision.

Park’s Layne Frandrup finished first at 139 pounds in the MNGWL Region 4 Qualifier, also held Saturday.

Park wrestles in the Pine Island Tournament Saturday, Feb. 3.

Davis, Dahlstrom lead Park gymnasts
Ashley Davis (34.850) and Emily Dahlstrom (34.575) went 1-2 in the all-around to lead Park past visiting Woodbury in girls gymnastics Thursday.

Park won the team decision, 133.175 to 123.975.

Natalya Rugel was sixth in the all-around (24.975) and Natalie Peters seventh (23.425).

Davis won the vault with a score of 9.425. Dahlstrom was third (8.850) and Rugel fourth (8.750).

Dahlstrom and Davis both scored 8.1 on bars. Clara Opichka was third (7.475), Natalie Peters fourth (7.200) and Annelisa Faletti fifth (7.150).

Dahlstrom finished first on the beam with an 8.475 and Davis was second with an 8.125. Rugel took third (8.100) and Ava Klecatsky fourth (7.750).

Davis capped a big night by winning the floor exercise with a 9.2 score. Dahlstrom was second with a 9.150. Rugel was fifth (8.125) and Faletti sixth (8.100).

Park hosts East Ridge Thursday, Feb. 1, starting at 6 p.m.

Cretin-Derham Hall boys steam past Park

Much like the boys hockey team, the Park boys basketball team had a game to forget this week, as host Cretin-Derham Hall doubled the score on the visiting Wolfpack Friday, winning 76-38.

The conference leading Raiders raced out to a 37-18 halftime lead and kept pouring it on in the second, outscoring the Wolfpack 39-20 after the break.

The 38-point loss was by far Park’s worst of the season and snapped a three-game Wolfpack winning streak.

Park had just four players score in the game. Anthony Giadyu led with 15 points, Tayvion Stewart scored 10, AJ Kennedy 9 and Miskir Esayas 4.

The Wolfpack fell to 6-4 in the Suburban East Conference and 8-9 on the season. Cretin continued its stay atop the league with a perfect 10-0 record and improved to 13-2 overall.

Park hosts Irondale (0-10, 2-15) Thursday, Feb. 1, starting at 7 p.m.

Park 67, Mounds View 54

Park jumped out to a fast start, leading 33-16 at the half, and cruised home with a 67-54 win over host Mounds View Wednesday, Jan. 24.

It was the Wolfpack’s third straight conference victory after starting 3-3 in the Suburban East Conference. Park went 6-3 in the first round of the SEC.

Anthony Giadyu led a balanced Park offense in scoring with 16 points. Tayvion Stewart had 13, AJ Kennedy 11, Kaeden Callais 9 and Dom Batts 8.

Park swim and dive team goes 1-1 on the week

Park swam and dove past Forest Lake Thursday after bowing to Irondale Tuesday in a pair of Suburbanm East Conference meets.

Park won the Forest Lake meet 105-81. Irondale topped Park 99-87 on Tuesday.

Against Forest Lake, Parker Jeseritz had individual wins in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.94) and the 100-yard backstroke (57.24) and swam legs on two of Park’s three winning relay teams.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Jeseritz, Mason Darling, Jack Schweigert and Ethan Cole won in 1:49.00. In the 400-yard freestyle relay it was Park’s Logan Schweigert, Lalee Yang, Cole and Jeseritz finishing first in 3:44.13.

Park’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jack Schweigert, LaLee Yang, Logan Schweigert and Darling also won in a time of 1:39.03.

Darling won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.36. Jack Schweigert took top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.69).

Damion Charpentier finished first in the 200-yard IM (2:18.63) and Lalee Yang was second (2:21.27).

Logan Schweigert was second in the 2090-yard freestyle (2:00.95). Darling was second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.66) and Cole third in 26.31.

Ethyn Schilling (193.50), Carter Darling (178.05) and Trey Jaso (158.35) finished 2-3-4 in diving, respectively.

Against Irondale, Park had wins in the 200-yard medley relay (Jeseritz, Darling, Schweigert and Schweigert, 1:46.45), Trey Jaso won the diving (159.30), Jeseritz finished first in the butterfly (58.03), Darling won the breaststroke (1:02.98)

Damion Charpentier won the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.42) and was second in the 200 freestyle (2:04.19). Darling was second in the 200-yard IM (2:05.59), Jack Schweigert took second in the 50 (24.16), Schilling was second in diving (159.30), Cole placed second in the 100 (55.59). Park was second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Jack Schweigert, Cole, Yang, Darling, 1:39.13). Jeseritz got second in the backstroke (58.22). The Wolfpack team of Logan Schweigert, Yang, Jeseritz and Cole was second in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:41.49.
