It was Deja Vu all over again for the St. Paul Park American Legion Post 98 baseball team which repeated as champions of the Challenger Classic tournament at St. Thomas Academy last weekend.
St. Paul Park defeated Andover, Wayzata and Minneapolis Washburn to win the 2023 senior Legion championship Sunday, pushing the team’s season record to 6-2. Park started the perfect 4-0 week streak with a non-tournament win over South St. Paul on June 15.
Park defeated Wayzata 3-0 Saturday, then bested Washburn 6-1 in the title game Sunday.
In the tournament, the team got both stellar pitching and timely hitting to sweep the three games, said manager Dan Harrison.
“That was a fun four-game win streak,” said Harrison. “The kids played well. Against Wayzata Charlie Brooke pitched a 75-pitch gem of a game. Then in the championship Boston Weidner threw an 81-pitch gem.”
It was a repeat for Weidner, who pitched St. Paul Park to a win in last season’s tournament title game.
It was also a happy Father’s Day for the two St. Paul Park coaches, both of whom saw their sons pitch the team to the title.
Against Wayzata, Tyler Schwartz knocked in a pair of triples and Luke Hatano also hit well, Harrison said.
“Luke has been swinging the bat quite well as well,” Harrison said. “He hit a pivotal double that scored runs in the championship.
St. Paul Park hosts Woodbury at Cottage Grove Thursday, starting at 6 p.m. The team then plays in the St. Cloud Chutes Legion Tournament Friday through Sunday.
